The weekly Seoul Selection email gives an insight into the history of the area of a different subway station. The most recent was Omokgyo:
Quote: |
O-mok-gyo, Paulownia Tree Bridge (Purple Line #5)
Paulownia Tree Bridge once spanned the Anyang cheon (Inner Brightness Stream) from southern Seoul into Gyeonggi Province, where shady, great leaf paulownias greeted the traveler. Formerly the trip was made on the Yang-hwa-jin (Willow Field Ferry), the biggest ferry in Joseon days. |

There's no hanja for that one but I assume it's from the words
Ƽ - endure
 - pass (mountain pass)
maybe...
Maybe there was a battle there and somebody kept a huge army away for a long time, letting everybody escape? |

Here's an explanation I found, all in Korean and very long:
http://www.seoul.go.kr/life/life/culture/history_book/seoul_ridge/junggu/1202882_2958.html
They give three possible theories for the name, none of which seem more plausible than the other. The place used to be called or ξġ, the hanja can be seen in the article. Attack / strike, cut + mountain pass, or help...valley. The two hanja in the middle of each seem to be just grammatical suffixes, so it's not 'cut the kid pass' and 'help defend valley'! |

, a kind of tree (I think it's an alder). The first hanja is tree + five over mouth, and the next means village. But put them together and you have the name of the tree, which coincidentally sounds the same as the word duck.

ſ - ߣ = New Dragon Mountain actually, that's why the army calls it the Dragon Hill Lounge.
Here are a few more that I know
ȭ - - Pear Blossom
 - - Bell Road
õ - ݣ - Prosperous Stream
 - ݣ - Prosperous Plain
õ - - Benevolent Stream
빮 - ڦ - The Great Eastern Gate
빮 - ڦ - The Great Western Gate
 - ߣ - Cinnamon Tree Mountain
 - - Medicinal/Spring Water
 - - Source of Water
A lot of them seem to be conjuring up an image of nature, which is kinda funny considering that most of these areas are places where most of the nature has been destroyed in the name of development. |

Don't have time to look it up or find any hanja or anything, but I remember reading the "Itae" part of Itaewon referred to some kind of pear tree or something (just like the previous post with Ewha).... I'd reckon (but I don't know- lacking time to check) that the hanja for the first syllable of Itaewon and Ewha Dae are the same?
I sorta remember reading that before it became a foreigner mecca, way back before Japanese occupation even, that it was famous (or something) for being a pear orchard ....
... Not anymore! |

 - Ejaculate
Most of the stops with mean water-something, although not all. Just look at the Hanja. Its the same Hanja for Wednesday. |
