I haven't read many, but a good one is What the Buddha Taught. I actually meant to bring it with me but forgot it so my parents are putting in a package for me. If you're interested you can borrow it once it arrives (who knows when that'll be though). |

I like to think Ive read extensively on this subject as far as books written specifically for Westerners goes, and a book called "A Path with Heart" by Jack Kornfield is the best I've read. He's a well-known North American that lived in a Burmese Theravada monastery. The book discusses the application of Buddhist practice in everyday life coupled with relevant anecdotes. Its really well-written, funny, touching and profoundly relevant to the immediate present. I would suggest this book to any individual looking to improve the quality of their life – interested in Buddhism or not. Im selective about what books I carry when I travel, but I dont even have to think twice about this one.
If you are looking for a serious exposition of Buddhist laws, guidelines, and practices (archaic), there is a book called The Path of Purity which illustrates everything from the root-dwellers practice to explicit instructions on how to develop psychic powers. The text is over a thousand years old and it has a page for every year of its life. I didnt find the information in it to be very applicable to my own life, but I found it interesting all the same. Its really hard to find. Best of luck to you on your journey |
