Freesolo, I'll shoot you a PM in a bit that may be of some use.
Somewhat related to Rapier's question, how does it work with these salary+housing packages? Do your employers generally insist that you accept the housing they've lined up (presumably docking your salary accordingly)? Or, will most let you choose between their housing or a higher salary but you're on your own for accommodations?
I know that few people bring along such huge sums that would cover a chonsei deal, or a key-money+rent deal. It wouldn't even be practical, given a one-year employment contract and no idea if the work, the employer, or even Korea is going to suit you.
I've heard from people working at universities that they are given the choice. One friend, who's pay is being docked 700-800,000 won/month, is really getting tired of faculty housing. He's about to opt out and is looking for something better and cheaper. He's got nearly enough to swing a low-end chonsei arrangement or a 20 mil. key-money + 500,000 won deal.
Is that common, being given the choice? And if it is, how many people opt to find their own housing in return for a higher salary? |

If you're just on your first year, you usually get thrown in their rotating fer'ner apartments that they've dropped key money for. I don't think your average hakwon even considers that teachers will want to hunt for their own place. However, once people start bunkering down, I'd assume that they request it during initial contract negotiations. I really want to find a new apartment right now, but I have a feeling that I wouldn't get any bonus, since my current pad is on the boss' contract with the complex. |

In my experience, if the wonjang has a shoebox allotted you, he doesn't wntertain the idea of giving you a bonus to find something better. Maybe if you negotiated, I don't know, i've never actually looked for my own place.
I'd be wary about handing any key money over to a korean in the first place. You're asking for a battle to get it back, I would think... |

So, other than the "korea herald" and "work n play", are there any more resources for someone looking for a new place to live.
the seoul classified doesnt have any, and the two sites above are quite limited.
Any help appreciated. |
