I see a number of you are musicians--perhaps some of you might be able to help me out. Is there a market/audience for progressive jazz in Seoul? More to the point, are there clubs and/or festivals that would book an American jazz group playing electric, spacey, kind of avant progressive jazz?
I haven't been in Korea for so long I have no clue what the scene is like. But lately I've been looking for an excuse to return...
thanks,
scott

| Yes! Jazz is pretty hip in Seoul right now. There would be a few different places, and I can't give you names. But if you go to Itaewon and find kfc, then turn the corner and head up a slight hill towards a restaraunt called "Mogul", about half way up on your left is a bar that I"ve seen jazz in. Sorry, I have a shocking memory for the names of places. Once you meet a couple of groovy Korean musos, they'll open up the whole scene for you ... |

Thanks--but maybe I wasn't clear. I'm in the US--thus asking musicians in Korea for the lowdown.
I've wanted to return to Korea for ages and am trying to find out if taking my band there would be a legitimate excuse...

Anyone?? is this an off-the-wall question--or am I simply posting in the wrong place?

it's off the wall Scott, I'm still thinking about it from when you posted it on my board!
I don't think there are too many people who know you can make money from Jazz in Seoul, I know at least 5 places that host live bands though. |

| Jazz is "progressive"? In what way? The unbearable noise gets louder as they have more beers? |

| I would not recommend coming here to try and make a full time living off music. If your band came over for a tour you could definitely get gigs, though I doubt they'd pay much. As for hooking up actual venues and so on, I don't think anyone on here could help you ... |

Thanks guys. I appreciate the input and am going to do more research...pay is not a huge issue (it's always important, but we get paid crap in the US too, so...) More important is to get gigs and sell CDs...and for me, personally, returning to Korea.
If we make it, I'll let you know.
