hi
Im about to finish my second contract in korea. I taught children for 1 year and am just about to finish an adult teaching contract. I would really like to get a good deal if i stay a 3rd year. I was thinking of staying around on a tourist visa on a few months to really look for the right deal. I was thinking possibly of a part time deal with the E2 visa perhaps if possible. what do you think is possible with this experience? any advice would be appreciated. cheers |

Anything is possible here in the land of EFL milk and honey. I say, as I always do, go for a university job. |

That sucks.
Go part time and earn 1.8 for 15 hours in a middle school.
No benefits, but a blinding timetable, plus visa, so plenty of time to do extra work. |

That sucks. Go to a university and earn 2.0+ for 12 hours.
Some benefits, regular timetable, visa, and whole lot of holidays. |

But I think you may agree that University gigs aren't always the easiest to a) find and b) be accepted for.
I know you did a thing on it, but they still aren't easily come by. |

I did the University gig.
If you really think this sucks for a hakwon, than something is wrong with your thinking.
What other hakwon have you seen/heard of that offers 3-day weekends, and only 5 (sometimes 6, if there are adults, which often there aren't) hours of teaching?
That's 20 hours a week, folks. Plus you get all the extras with no hassle. Medical insurance, pension, 1-year bonus, round-trip airfare, single housing. Heck, my boss even pays for utilities. He speaks English fluentlyand lived overseas for 12 years. No crappy co-workers either. All the Koreans speak fluent English, none of this grammer-ridden crap that gets passed on to the students from poorly educated Korean teachers.
And here in Cheonan, I have friends that work from 9-11, 1-8 and their boss keeps telling them how lucky they are. They get less than I do.
Maybe this doesn't compare to a university, but for a hakwon, I haven't heard of a sweeter deal. Sure, there are some paying 2.2-2.3 million (not in Cheonan), but you're working at least 5 days a week and at least 6-7 hours a day. Those are for 120 hrs/month. My gig is 80 hours a month. I've worked here over 1 1/2 years and would stay on indefinitely if I didn't have plans for getting a Master's degree.
I'd really love to know if someone has a better deal at a hakwon.

Exactly. No benefits. Add in that year bonus, housing, pension, round-trip airfare, medical payments, utilities and I'm pulling in an extra 10,000,000 compared to your middle school job. |

In defense of my situation and comment, that is my about 50% o my salary as the middle school, while sponsoring my visa, also allows me to work in numerous other places, taking my weekly total to 27 hours.
For just under 4 a month plus visa, and 27 hours a week. I don't think that is bad. Just my thinking.
I love my schedule now and am more than happy with the money I am earning, plus I have room to earn more for only a few extra hours a week. Suits me fine.
Compiling your own schedule is a good thing I think as you can choose your hours and when you want to work. |

Seems to me like the smartest person on this thread so far is clearly justagirl for actually wanting to go home and do something decent and professional with her life instead of hanging around Korea "teaching" English for the next 10 years... |
So are you saying people that stay here for 10 years teaching English are stupid???
Look Beaver annoys a bit as well but he is just showing what is out there.
I know you have had a hard time adventureman but not everyone does you know. If I live here for 10 years teaching English I can think of much worse things to do with my life. I enjoy what I do mostly and in my opinion is much better than sitting in my native country feeling sorry for myself.
Does that make me a loser???? |

Toby are breaking the law and working outside your E-2 assigned workplace while working all those "extra" jobs?
Being here on a marriage visa is a wonderful thing as it does allow me to work pretty much anywhere I want, as long as I tell immigration and I get taxed accordingly. Not of course saying I have reported it as I should, but most of that is out of laziness and not wanting to go to Mokdong again. Plus, I teach in my house, which again is legal, if reported to the local dong office.
If so, why do you automattically assume that a). Its so easy to pick up all those extra hours at side jobs and make loads of money?
I assume it is easy to pick up extra work anywhere and everywhere because I look on the internet for them. Maybe you should try that.
and b). Everyone is automatically comfortable doing so?
I haven't met anybody in nearly four years who isn't comfortable doing privates.

Teaching in a middle school, which I am by the way, qualified to do with a four year university, middle and high school education degree and also a CELTA means that I am not doing something professional now?? How does that work?
Get your head out of your arse. I am not comparing my salary to others. I know many people are happier doing a 3-9pm job or something similar, but, from personal experience, I am sick of that and have decided to do other stuff which is much more suited to my life, both socially and financially.
I could go home and teach and earn less money, for double the hours and not be happy in my life. I could stay here and love my job and work less hours and have time to do a whole heap of other things too.
Having said that, I think I am going to go and play a game of squash now. It is 2.00 in the afternoon. And do you know why I want to do that?
Because I can.
Find out what you are talking about before you start trying to tell others what to do.
