Basically the thread title says it all.

I found out that the Philips DVD player I use with my TV doesn't play my VCD discs which were in the avi format when I burned them.

I'm a cheapskate so I'm looking for free software which will convert avi to Mpeg. Or other useable formats.

I downloaded a few from Download.com but they were demo versions which only allowed a few minutes of converted video.

Any ideas?

Thanks! You've sorted more of my 'puter problems than one man ever should. It's appreciated.

Are these AVI files in DivX or Xvid encoding? I think that might be where your problem lies.

I recently noticed that Philips now has DVD players on the market for under $100 (CDN) that support these formats.

I've been wanting to convert the the 50 or so movies I have in these formats to something playable on my DVD player for some time, but never got around to it.

Given the lengthy time it would take to do the conversion of this collection, I plan on just going out and buying another DVD player.

It's an option you may also want to consider.

Worthy point, but I don't want to buy another DVD player 6 weeks after I bought the last one.....

Don't know about the Divx or Xvid thing.

Check on suprnova. There are a couple of programs. One problem you are going to run into is that the file takes a long time to convert and usally ends up bigger then before, so you have to get a video editor also. (Also available on suprnova).

Happy converting
