Education Spending Jumps 33 Percent
Despite the prolonged economic downturn, Korean households increased their monthly education spending by 33.2 percent to 494,000 won ($445) on average this year from 371,000 won in 2000. The survey also found that local households spent a monthly average of 287,000 won on education for each child this year, up 29.9 percent from 221,000 won in 2000, with 158,000 won for pre-school, 186,000 won for elementary school, 239,000 won for middle school, 348,000 won for high school, and 573,000 won for university and above.
