OK. I'm going to start applying for an ESL teaching job now that my passport has arrived. My question is this:
Virtually all prospective employers ask one to send a photocopy of the passport info page. Since almost all of this sending is via email, I've had documents such as diplomas, certificates, and now the passport scanned for sending as a .jpg file.
Are there any security concerns that people have with sending this scanned duplicate of the passport info page throught the email? Like, for instance, a high quality scanned representation being of any use to passport counterfeiters if it were to fall into the wrong hands.
I'm probably being overly concerned to inquire about this, but I think it is always a good idea when dealing with a new situation to confer with others who have faced it before. And, not surprisingly, I only know people that fall into that category here on the Cafe boards.
Thanks in advance for your replys. |

Well, those counterfeiters are most likely going to be the recruitment agents you deal with. Don't give them anything that is original (Eg, degree, academic transcripts) because they will always make some excuse which means you are not getting them back. Scanned copies only speed up the process and convenience of the application. If you really worry about this, just lower the quality of the jpg file. If you really really worry, then just photocopy your documents (black and white), and get it stamped and signed by a justice of the peace. |

I doubt modern Canadian and American passports can be counterfeited, especially from a scan. As well, I'm not sure there's some network of passport counterfeiters with a packet sniffer hooked up to your isp, their isp, or the backbone looking through the terabytes of uuencoded files ziping around the net for a image that might contain passport information.
I'd not worry about it. |

Thanks for the re-assurances. I didn't really think this was anything to be concerned about, but might as well check with some other people who have already answered it, I thought. |
