I really didn't realise some of this stuff:
S.KOREA:
Prostitution:
1989: 23% of total female population worked in prostitution.
1994: 1.6 million women between the age of 15-29 worked as prostitutes. (One fifth , 2 out of every 10).
Abortion:
1.5-2 million abortions performed annually (3 times the number of actual deliveries, Korea ranks 2nd in the world).
80% of abortions were gender-selective-to eliminate female foetuses.
71% of Korean women questioned responded that producing a son was a marriage requirement.
79% of women having abortions reported satisfaction with the operation.
Divorce
2nd highest divorce rate of developed countries (3 per 1000).
Rape:
1999 6359 reported cases
(Only 2.2% of rape cases are actually reported, a study found)
Domestic violence
1997 31% of korean households
Sexual abuse
45% of female high school students reported sexual molestation by males (fondling of breasts and genitals the most common complaint).

Korean society = Hell. |

That first stat makes me wonder about the veracity of the others.
23% of the total female population?
That's practically 1 in 4, from babies up to octogenarians....
Anyone else finding that statistic hard to believe? |

Not really. It didn't say the octogenarians were currently active. |

| I find it pretty hard to believe since it's illegal for doctors to tell women the gender of their baby. |

Like many things in Korea, perhaps it's "technically" illegal...that doesn't mean it doesn't happen. Doctor didn't hesitate to tell us when we asked. All of the Korean couples I know that have had babies recently new the sex of the baby before he/she was born. I do think that the doctors try to delay telling the parents the sex of baby, but if you really pushed the doctor, I'm sure he/she would tell you. Again, yes, "technically" illegal, but in practice.....

And Koreans are a law-abiding folk who would not dare bend a rule for an envelope of won or two. |

| From what I hear, the doctors will generally tell you, but not until it's too late to have a legal abortion. I'm sure rules are bent, but to the tune of 1.2 million gender selective abortions per year? That seems very, very high. |

Perhaps, but something has skewed the male/female live birth ratio quite heavily in a very short time. |

| Well, I just noticed that in my class of 43 grade 3 students there are only sixteen girls. Annecdotal evidence yes, but it's a fairly random sample. |

Am I missing something? Where does this article give the source for the numbers it "reports"?
Don't believe everything you read, especially on the internet and especially when the website has an agenda. I'm sure Rapier has been desperately searching for some "proof" to back up his ridiculous claims, a gay website is the best he could come with. |

actually at lunch we saw a big group of school kids and the translator started telling me about the higher ratio of boys to girls because of this selective abortion stuff. I guess I just don't want to believe it because it's horrendous.
She also said that the reason Korean people don't whistle is because of the recession though, so I don't know whether she's a trustworthy source. |

| My school's got over 2 500 kids. The boy/girl ratio is about 55/45. |

| I agree with dutchman. I think Statistics can be found for any country that can make it look bad. Or good. |
