So I had been really hard with my school's first year drama group. They did really well in their district where the placed second, and did an awesome job at performing their play at the local city council.

I was really touched when the mothers of the boys took my co-teacher and I out for dinner and gave me a cake gift set later on..

One of my students loves Spider Man and American sci fi movies. Of all the students I have, he's the only one I get a sense where he's learning English because he wants to decode these comics and movies, not simply because his mother makes him.

If I'm at a used book store in Itaewon, I'll pick him up a couple Spider Man comics. Sometimes you teach for the kids that give a fork and if you lose them you'd question staying in your job. He said he was showing his school mates his collection of Spider Man comics and they were like "whoa dude where'd you get those!" "My hagwon teacher gave them to me!" "Whoa dude you got a kind teacher!" That was nice to hear.

Anyway, one day a few days after I passed him a couple comics, he gave me a couple nice pewter drinking cups, each had a historical depiction of a Korean teacher. His parents must have bought them but it was nice to get a bit of recognition.

crazylemongirl,
It's the little things...

Exactly.
Why do you think I frequently post about salary and benefits for foreigners?

Right on, plus he's an arse too.

My students often give me candies, draw pictures on the board (sometimes not flattering Laughing ), and I get alot of smiles and hellos too. I'm really careful about what I take however, since I usually give very little (materially speaking) to them, just too many to do that. Plus the students are just plain broke, or living off parents, or working long hours at crappy part time jobs.

Caution is the word. You have to watch out giving them too much I've found through experience. You end up turning your kids into little beggers. "TEACHER CHOCO PIE!" "TEACHER PRESENT!"

I give my students choco-pies and the like as incentives. The next class comes and they say, "teacher choco-pies." I say to them, "I only get snacks and cookies for classes that say thank you. Sorry, maybe next time you will remember to say 'thank you.'" Some kids understand and say thank you and others don't. Oh Well!
