The Korea Association of Obstetricians announced yesterday that it will stop giving epidurals to reduce pain during deliveries until fees are raised to what they consider an acceptable level.
Choi An-na, the spokeswoman for the organization, most of whose 2,800 members own clinics, said that the current fee, between 120,000 won ($114) and 150,000 won, is the minimum amount to cover expenses.
Under current rules, hospitals' fees for epidurals must be based on a fixed percentage of the overall delivery cost. But it has recently been revealed that many hospitals have charged more. The Health Insurance Review Agency's Web site has received many questions from mothers asking whether the additional fees were legal. A Health and Welfare Ministry official said hospitals must refund any excess fees.
