You didn't include a third option...

3. Kill it there and then.

Why would I have it put down three years later? Is it still sick then?

I totally believe if I could give it a good life for the time I am here, I would be happy to take care of something, really take care of it, then say goodbye to it when I leave (and find a suitable replacement owner).

Yes. Put it out of its misery there and then. When I was a kid, my old man took me out to the rubbish dump to show me what becomes of the cats and dogs people are too "kind" to put down. Better off dead than live like that.

If you can, the best thing to do is foster the kitten until a home can be found (assuming you can't adopt the kitten). Otherwise, the least you can do is call a rescue organization that will try to rehome him/her.

Saint, is this a real-life practical application question, or a philosophical musing?

Just wondering,

Glen

(we dealt with something like this a few weeks ago, but our answer/solution is a little long for here).

I wondered the same thing! Either way, it's a pretty bizarre question.

3 happy years and then a relatively easy death is far, far better than complete and utterly misery and dying from starvation or the like.

If I took in a cat and then found it were sick, I would try to nurse it back to health, but there's no way I'd put down a cat just because I was leaving. I also wouldn't have a cat that was in utter pain live.

I was once faced with this decision when I took in a cat, and it turned out when the doctor went to spay her, he found she had some kind of scary-ass lump on her back. It was like the worst week of my life, waiting for the results to come in, to see what was going to happen to her, and then I would have to make a decision for what I wanted to do.

I talked with a friend of mine who told me her family's cat had cancer but her family decided they were going to give it the best life possible until it started showing signs of pain and suffering. THEN they would put it down.

That's a good enough idea for me.

Luckily for me, my cat's tumor turned out to me some fat mass which will go away in between 3 and 6 months. My cat is happy and healthy, getting in my face and under my feet, shredding my furniture and doing all the things a healthy cat does.

why don't people care about all the starving rats? I'm sure if you cleaned them up and stroked them enough you could get a rat to shoot you the odd disdainful look as it scratched your furniture.

Because rats are just ghastly James. Kittens are cute and cuddly.

I'm assuming this is true, Saint, and an experience you just had. If I were you, I'd go back, pick up the kitten, take it to the animal hospital and ask them to put it down.

My son has two pet rats. They're nice but they don't like each other much.
