Knowing that students planning to attend an American University are absolutely pooping a burr-ridden log over the new TOEFL speaking test coming in September, I decided to see what was available for study.
Seohyun Books in Bundang had at least two titles.
One of them was from the University of Michigan. The other (the ultra-green one) was all printed up to look like it was printed in the USA -- complete with a fake printing company name. When you dig inside and read who the four authors were, you realize that they are all Koreans educated in California.
When you dig even deeper and read the material, you find it's full of errors! The even had the stupidity to label one of the practice tests in bold 1/4 page type: "Engilsh Practice Test."
Errors in some sections are "on purpose" to show what mistakes an overseas student might make, however there were many errors throughout the rest of the book.
It never ceases to amaze me how quickly Koreans think they can make a buck, and how they cut corners to do it.
The sad thing is that many of the students won't even notice. |
