I was excited to see The Korea Times reviewed my Korea-related memoir in this Saturday's edition. The review is online here if anyone else (doubt it) wants to check it out:

Shawner,

Way to go. I had no idea you had written a book.

Good to see someone has made productive use of their time here.

Again, congratulations.

It sound a lot like my first job in Busan.

Particularly after the long airline flight, and immediately sticking me in a FULL DAY of classes!! I came there 3-4 days early (to learn how to teach before the classroom), the previous teacher left early, so I was forced to start teaching immediately from the point of arrival.

Also got the worst schedule including weekend classes (which werent in the contract), but I did them anyways.

Weird. I did know about the book but for some reason I thought that Swiss James had written it. But then again I used to think that cheem was...um...the guy who manages What the Book. Always forget his name.

Anyway I'll put a bit up about the book on my page.

"There ought to be a law against serving ``kimchi chigae (spicy cabbage stew)'' to foreigners as their first dish in Korea. It only makes sense."

Swiss James has a link on his blog to Shawner88's book and gives his own "review" of sorts: Click this link, then buy Shawn's book. Don't think, just do it immediately. Likewise, Shawn's blog has a link to James' blog.

It's all very incestuous, and I don't want to speculate as to what sort of sick, twisted luv thang those two have going on. But I can tell you I've read Island of Fantasy, and I pretty much agree with Weisbart's review in the Times.

It's not a serious commitment of time, being under 200 pages. But once you start in, it can interfere with other plans, like working and eating, because it draws you in and most pages turn themselves. It says something about an author of precisely this kind of book, when they can make situations and themes that are so familiar to the reader (Why didn't I write a book!?) as fun and captivating as Shawn has done.

My prediction: Most people will derive more entertainment out of this book than the last three movies you saw, and for less than half the price.

My rating: Recommended.

Hey, thanks for the decent comments. I did make a post about the book a month ago but it was deleted shortly after for "self promotion" ...not to mention most people laughed at the very notion of a teacher writing a book.

Was nice that The Korea Times reviewed it to give it a wee bit of legitimacy anyway.

I think thats great Shawner. Writing a book is no easy feat. Despite what some posters here think.

Just curious....What kind of publication arrangement did you get?

I guess this thread breaks those same rules
So nice of Dave and the Mod team here to support your book

You might like to try plugging your book here:

http://forum.japantoday.com/default.asp

Site for foreigners in Japan, stuff about Korea gets posted there often and you should reach a pretty wide audiance. The Mods there do a great job. You'll get no crap from them about "self promotion".
Plus you can say the word "b reasts" if you really want to
