I have this class, basically good kids but very rowdy.
Anyhow....this 12 year old kid (who should know better) just came up and flicked me in the balls and he hit a sensitive spot.
Before he could say, low blow, I had grabbed his arm, took him to the other side of the hagwon sat him down(a little roughly) and left him, his books, and his bag there telling him not to come back.
What pissed me off is the wonjang comes up and goes, don't be so angry about it, because he might leave the hagwon. I asked the wonjang if I can flick him in the balls and see how it feels. I think he got the message.
So I suppose what I'm asking is has this happened to you before and what wouldyou do/have yo done????? |

Hehe...welcome to teaching kids...
Sounds like you over-reacted....Mind you I think a lot of us might...'specially when they hit that spot that just brings you to your knees.
Mine think about it...but they are pretty sure I would kill them and if I didn't the boss around here is a maniac and they are definitely afraid of him. (probably because he treats their mother's like they are children and won't take guff off them about the behaviour of their kids...of course it's a business so he sucks up like crazy over other things...)
Put a little ice on it and kiss and make up... |

Called a dong-chim(sp?) welcome to Korea.
It's widespread, though I have never suffered one. (Had to block one from the boss's daughter my first week here...*grrr*)
If one of my students actually hit me with one I think I would over-react
And apparently if done properly it isn't a little poke it is a severe JAB...

I dont reckon he over reacted at ALL. Firstly, kids of all ages KNOW that you can never hit a boy/man there. Iam sure if they arent one, they have brothers, fathers, etc, who have TOLD them to NEVER hit there. This boy deserved a lot more than a rough shove to sit down and not come back! but due to being teachers we are refrained from applying the apt punishments that fit the crime. A swift kick in the same place would have seen him right, but of course.....THAT would be an over reaction!
Had it happen numerous times, usually by accident, but once or twice, i could tell it was on purpose! |

I'd say you overreacted, but just a little. I would've kept the problem within the room and dealt with it, but otherwise I would've given the kid verbal hell. After all, the kid may not have known that what he did was necessarily bad, or maybe you were being too friendly and he does what he likes to do with his friends... One time an otherwise angelic little girl threw scissors at me because she didn't realize just how dangerous that could be. I took her to the counter, but in a case like that, I kept verbal reprimanding to a minimum, especially since she missed... |

| I agree with crazy; I don't think you over reacted at all. I would have done the same damn thing. Kids should KNOW that it's not appropriate to touch ANYONE there. Of course, you can blame the parents for not raising them right, but a swift kick in the ass is probably more fun and ultimately, more justified. I've never had any kid do this to me......yet, but I have had girls pinch me in the ass before when I was writing stuff on the board. I usually just yell at them to stop. It's funny - I never even considered kicking them out of class for it, but a poke in the balls? That kind of thing just demands the most severe repurcussions. |

| Maybe this is part and parcel of a culture that likes playing games where flicking or otherwise inflicting stinging pain is part of the fun, like when Koreans play kaibaiboh. Even so I agree that you have to make sure your student knows damn well not to do it again, so I'd say your reaction was about right. |

I bet you that student wouldn't even consider doing that to his Korean teachers. |

I don't think the OP over-reacted AT ALL. Students need to learn the bounds of appropriate behavior with their foreign teachers. Back in the days of hagwon teaching, the "dong-chim" happened to me only twice in 3 years. The first time it happened, I grabbed the kid by his "dong-chim" fingers, crouched down to his level, looked him in the eye and said "If you do that again, I'll break your fingers!" He didn't understand the words, but my tone and expression said it all. Word was passed throughout the school that I wasn't to be messed with.
The second time it happened was at the same school, but with a new student who was kind of "wankta". The other kids put him up to it...with the same result.
You've got to take a firm stand about this kind of behavior, or they'll walk all over you. |

Even remote jungle tribes in Africa and Borneo have moved beyond this type of behavior.
Really leaves you wondering doesn't it ? I like you so I'm gonna stick my finger up your ass or do something to your sexual organs.
Be thankful that no one's trying to pick lice out of your hair for lunch I guess. |

One of my less-successful pickup lines.
Only marginally more successful than "I help moderate a Korean ESL message board".

Apart from the "don't come back" part, totally appropriately handled. You effectively communicated to the twirp...er, CHILD, that he behaved poorly. Just have to give him an opportunity to demonstrate that he got the message. Remember- the behaviour, not the kid, yadda yadda.
