I built one back in 1996 (grade 10) and it's been in Canada ever since...the first time I came over to asia was in 1999 and I've always had the vague idea of bringing it over. Hopefully I'll be settled down enough this year to do so.

Here's what a hammered dulcimer looks like for those who don't know, but mine's a much lighter colour and isn't chromatic.

Who are you Mithridates?

hammered dulcimer?

Enigma wrapped in a riddle. At the end of a scavenger hunt of which the clues are written entirely in Hanja.

I mean really. Hammered dulcimer? Are you for real?

Damn. Play that thing man....Play it...

Is it something you wield(sp?) Like an axe? Or is it more mellow? Liek something you'd play at a distant relative's friend's mother's second wedding?

Just curious.

Disregard at will.

That's some pretty outstanding craftsmanship/work for someone to do when they are in grade 10.
Haha, back in grade 10 industrial arts/shop class a lot of the guys were turning out pipes on the lathe. Or making stools, paper towel roll holders, birdhouses, etc.

I had a professor show me how, that's how I did it...a Dutch guy who was a forte-piano and harpsichord builder who had a hammered dulcimer making workshop. He told us what to do every step of the way which made it easy, even though it still took six weeks.

I have a couple of friends who do. but they are in the us. I don't think it is all that difficult to at least master the basics. One of them just picked it this past semester. I say check out the Uni's in your area. you'd be surprised what you turn up and a lot of groups are willing to train you on the instrument.

Knew a guy in Ottawa -- Greg Tamblyn -- played a great dulcimer...but isn't it called the HAMMER dulcimer? "Hammered dulcimer sounds like a very drunk musical instrument. Laughing

I made a magazine rack and a pencil holder!

I also made a huge wooden bat out of pine. Obviously it was way too soft for real play, but it was fun to see that huge chunk of wood block shake the hell out of the wood lathe!

I am an amateur history buff and I have a friend who is quite talented at it. He showed me the basics but I am so rusty at it, I am not sure I could even play the most basic tunes. I would love to read more on this because it would be nice to try again.

Cheers,
PBB

Holy smokes.

I made a lamp with a wood lathe in grade nine shop class... Then, one day when there was a sub. teacher, we all made throwing stars and knives. Then we all got in trouble the next day when the teacher came back and found "odd-shaped sheet metal cuttings" in the garbage can. We were certainly a bunch of dumbasses....

Anyone remember Denis Leary's bit about making bongs in shop class from "No Cure for Cancer"?... Heh heh...
