maybe it's not unusual... i don't know.
anyway... i started my last contract last december, but didn't go on my visa run to japan until january of this year. i'm finished now, and i've gotten my money and ticket and whatnot. but now i want to go home for christmas, and come back right after christmas, which would put me here with about two or three weeks left on my old visa.
now, in order to obtain a new e2 visa, do i need to obtain a letter of release from my old school, or will it suffice to cancel my current visa by simply telling immigration at the airport that i wish to cancel my visa, and leaving my immigration card with them? my supervisor said that the latter would suffice, but i really don't want any surprises when i fly back in.
if not an e2 visa, would i be able to cancel my current visa at the airport on the way out, and come back on a tourist visa?
if anyone has been through a similar situation, please let me know. thank you. |

Turning in your ARC at the immigration desk as you leave will cancel your current E-2 Visa. So, after you get back Canada side you'd be free to get a new visa.
If you intend to get the "blue paper" process started before you leave Korea then you'll need the release letter. Otherwise you should be ok.

not true.
your visa is active until the date stamped in your passport.
your ARC has absolutely nothing to do with your visa.
you can hand in your ARC, and come back on a tourist visa, but you cannot get a new E2 until the old one expires.
@endoftheworld
are you planning to get a new E2 before you come back to korea, ie.before your old one runs out??...then you will need a release.
why not just wait out the two weeks, your old visa will expire, then you can get a new one with less hassle. |

Yeah, you are right.
Immigration will likely want a release letter...unless you go to immigration with your current director/manager to cancel the visa. If the visa is canceled by your employer, then you don't need the release letter.
Turn in your ARC at immigration for your area and get an exit order.

It won't take but 10 minutes for you and your employer to go to immigration and cancel your current E2. It is a simple process and certainly the easiest method. |

Yeah, I'm pretty certain you have to have a letter of release or wait till the E2 expires. (to be strictly legal that is)
(But sometimes, who knows? Seems immigration often works on a case-by-case basis, or depending on the mood of the officer you talk to! Maybe that's how it works in a country where laws are not as solid as westerners are used to?)
Maybe just hang out back home for that 2 weeks? |
