Just a quick question to those of you who are teaching in Korea, and are masters graduates.

I am considering returning to school next Summer and I'm interested in getting a masters degree related to linguistics or ESL. For those of you who hold teaching positions and whom are accredited with Masters degrees in these fields, did your undergrad degree play a role in either your job application and eligibility; or even immigration status and application?
As my undergrad is totally unrelated to teaching and I would be investing a lot into studying for a teaching related masters, I am concerned that both now and in the future my nonsense bachelors will always play a part in future positions I might apply to here in Korea.

Question: Does your masters degree take new precedence? Did you apply for both your teaching positions and immigration solely with your masters?

Thanks in advance.

Your highest earned degree is most important. A master's degree may get you into a university position. However, do not expect compensation for your degree or experience.

Did you apply for both your teaching positions and immigration solely with your masters?
I submitted all my degrees.

Does this mean that my old unrelated-what-the-hell-are-u-doing-teaching degree will have to accompany my Masters if I apply for jobs, positions and for immigration?

Can I ask why you are worrying about it so much?
What does it matter what immigration thinks of your first degree?

I did a Comp Sci. degree from a crappy US university because I needed to finish a 4 year degree quickly. (I had tons of transferable credits that Canadian universities wouldn't allow.)

I got all "A" s from that university and was able to apply to a reputable masters program in Canada.

First of all most of the times a degree is a check box on an application...bachelors...check...masters...check (not only here...in the West as well.) (awaits the barrage of IVY league students kicking down his door)

Secondly, your bachelor degree exists...live with it... Smile are you asking if you can just exclude it? Perhaps...but why? They aren't judging you less because of it...

Is it a degree from a diploma mill? A fake online degree?
Or are you just a little sensitive about having a basket weaving degree...

Don't be...most people have no idea "what they want to be when they grow up" at the time of completing their first degree.

I took my degrees to the Korean consulate in Atlanta to get them certified and was told that a certified copy of the master's alone should be enough. The immigration office in Uijongbu, however, wasn't sure how to process an E-2 visa without a bachelor's, so I ended up submitting both of them.

As for getting a job, both degrees were useful. The hagwon I'm at requires either a valid teaching certificate or a graduate degree in either English or education. Having both qualifications (the teaching certificate was based on my bachelor's) earned me an extra W100,000 or so a month, plus a couple of other perks.

Whatever (decent) job you apply for will want a record of your academic background, which will include your B.A. If you look at the job ads for university jobs, you will notice that every ad asks for copies of your diplomas (both of them) and your transcripts (B.A. and M.A. transcripts). Having said that, once you have an M.A. in TESOL or Linguistics, I doubt people will care too much about your B.A.
