I'm in GEPIK and I really want to quit my job. I'm going through some emotional problems and I feel really isolated right now. I just want to go home ASAP.

The problem is that there is a 60-day notice requirement in the contract. Also the school probably won't be too pleased with the idea of me leaving while the school is in session.

Has anyone been in my situation and put in a notice anyway? how did you school react? Did they give you a hard time?

School will not be in session if you put in notice now so it's perfect timing. Don't feel bad as the isolation is not for everyone, including myself.

Question: If you put in the 60 day notice now and the end of the 60 days falls right on your 6 month mark, do you have to pay back your arrival plane ticket or does that constitute the end of the work period?

I know GEPIK contracts say after 6 months, you don't have to repay it, but do they find some weird loop hole if you put in your letter or resignation BEFORE the actual 6 months even though you will actually leave after 6 months?

You signed the contract. Give them what is due. Unless they screw with your pay, feeling isolated is not a good enough reason in my opinion to up and leave, thus giving the foreigners a bad name.

Yes he signed the contract, and giving sixty day notice is abiding by the contract! I congratulate him for sucking it up for that long! I fail to see how this gives foreigners a bad name. He is going about it the right way!

He hasn't stated that he gave 60 days notice, only that he wanted to leave asap. And gangpae suggested he just leave immediately. This I think gives us a bad name if people just pack up and leave without giving notice.

You own or manage a hagwon, do you not or am I mistaken?

Some teachers go through hell, like being hit or had their apartment ransacked or stalked, etc. Doesn't that give the Koreans a bad name in that school..this teacher is the only one who speakds. I had no one to go to.s a lot of English except for her two friends.

That being said, this Ct gave me all of six days chance and I had to pay a lot of money out of my pocket. public school..ha
many of them do not want us there..we are forced on them...I made lesson plans and taught the class while the CT came late, sometimes not at all or sat on the phone..either in her office or in the class...so much for co-teaching!

Upon further review, I think you are right. I guess I read the OP too quickly. That, along with the thread title and the comments of others on where a 60 day notice would fall in the school year. But it does sound like he is ready to bolt without notice.

Still, although not the best route to take, I would not judge him too harshly if his emotional state is as bad as he says. And that is for him to decide.

How long have you been with the school? How far are you from Seoul? The best thing to do is to find something to get you through the weeks (books, teach yourself a music insturment, exercise, get into a TV show, something...anything), then head to Seoul for the weekends. Stay with a friend or in a cheap motel Friday and Saturday nights. Go back to work on Monday feeling refreshed.

That said, if it's not your thing, then it's not your thing. Pulling a runner without without being screwed by the school does continue to tarnish the English Teacher image. But, no one will stop you from leaving if you decide that's the way to go.

On a side note...my school can't or won't tell me when the end of the spring semester is for GEPIK high schools. Does anyone here have a rough idea (or an exact idea)? Thanks.

I am in full agreement that if a teacher is miserable, then they should leave. I tell my teachers that if they don't like the school, or the lifestyle that they have found themselves in, then they should quit, as they aren't doing me any favors by not enjoying their jobs and thus not performing up to my expectations. However, the reality is that it takes a minimum of 4 weeks to get a new teacher in place. Sometimes it can take up to 6 weeks depending on the consulate. If a teachers runs, then that places the school in a very bad situation. If, as the OP mentioned, it is because he feels isolated, he should try to work something out with the school. I believe that if the school is honest with the teachers, then that courtesy should be given to the school.

I am not judging the OP, I am merely stating how the school will feel if the OP ups and goes.

CA-NA-DA-ABC, I wish you the best of luck, and hope that you find somthing to keep yourself occupied. Try to stick out the 60 days, and ask the school that if they find someone sooner, would it be possible for you to leave sooner.

I just asked for a decent school to reciprocate with all I am willing to give. A month's worth of lesson plans still sit on my desktop along with subscribing to BarryFunEnglish, etc. and doing the medical check (costly) and the TEFL course..also costly...just to get dismissed.

I just want a decent school..hagwon or otherwise like any other teacher, and I have invested a lot to be here this time.

Don't have my calendar in front of me, but I believe it's July 22 or 23.

Leaving a job with notice is usually the best route to take, but do you deny that sometimes 'doing a runner' is the only option open to teachers? I'm sure you are a thoroughly scrupulous guy, but what about people stuck in jobs that are living nightmares - not unusual - what advice would you give then?
