What is the consensus on WILS? Does anyone know anything about it? How do you feel about the "no vacation" clause? Thanks

WELL, THE WAY I AM THINKING IS THAT THERE ARE OTHER BENEFITS TO THE CONTRACT THAT MAY OUTWEIGH THE VACATON TIME.

FOR INSTANCE, YOU ARE PAID HOURLY-YOU ARE PAID FOR WHAT YOU WORK. THERE IS A BIG FOREIGN STAFF WHICH MEANS MORE PROFESSIONAL AND SOCIAL OUTLETS. I'VE HEARD MOK-DONG IS A NICE PART OF SEOUL...SO I AM JUST WONDERING IF THERE ARE ANY HORROR STORIES AND/OR SUCCESS STORIES FROM TEACHERS WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED IT.

YIKES!!! Calm the *beep* down already... Shocked
(No need to yell)

Hopefully if anyone knows of any red flags they will let you know.
As for the vacation...if you think you can do without it and are here to horde money then it will likely be fine..if you are here to experience Korea, see the sites, etc (or haven't taught ESL before) you may need a break somewhere along the way.

Worst comes to worst you could likely negotiate some unpaid leave later on. The thing is, is the money you are being paid hourly making up for the money you are "losing" by not having vacation. Hourly is appealing if you are trying to "break the bank" while you are here...

Me? I too lazy...privates...crazy hours...etc..not up my alley at this point. Money to live and explore Korea and that is enough for me... Smile

WILS Mokdong...across the street from TGIF....just like many hakwons...WILS is always posting job ads looking for victims...er...teachers. Anytime a school/business has to constantly look for teachers instead of retaining the ones they have...a problem exsists. But.. also because it is preventable by the mere exercise of personal responsibility.
If you are happy with the contract...then who am I to tell you different!
You need to get the best contract terms for yourself. But...WILS is skirting the law I thing. Labor law does address the issue of vacation. And labor law tells WILS what it can and can't do. WILS is hoping that FT's don't know the law and won't make any problems for them.
Hourly pay? A guaranted minimum?

What is hourly pay...WILS terms? Meaning 50 minutes is not one hour...so 5 fifty minute classes are 250 minutes vs 300 minutes at 60 minutes a class?

I do know that in the past...many complaints about WILS Mokdong were posted on this site. The owner was considered a jerk and screwed over a number of teachers.

Thanks for you thoughts hellofaniceguy....by the way, turtlepi1, the all caps message wasn't because I was angry- I was at work in a program that required all caps (I guess I should have been working!!)

Here is some old bad info (2002) on Wils:
http://groups.msn.com/teachersclub/greylistschool.msnw?action=get_message&mview=0&ID_Message=86&LastModified=4675398547440906308

On the flipside, there are 30 teachers working there now. That might also be a factor in why they advertise so regularly. If you want a balanced and informed perspective of how things are now, get some contact info of some people that are working there now, and ask them a lot of questions.
