sorry...you have to go to Hawaii for these waves.....
Is the weather cooperating or what!!??!?!? I'd love to be riding these pipelines!!!
50-foot waves headed for isles!!!!
The North Shore prepares for the Eddie
Aikau big-wave contest.
When waves as high as five-story buildings are predicted to hit Hawaii's northern shorelines, expert surfers wax their boards!
Nature's display of raw power got under way last night, when state authorities closed several beaches across the state in anticipation of 30-foot waves, which were expected to reach up to 50 feet by sunrise today!
The massive waves are expected to attract large crowds to Oahu's North Shore. And they better bring bicycles if they want to get near the rarely held Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational surfing contest, which is scheduled for today at Waimea Bay.

I dont know squat about surfing. Tried it once during a hurricane though. When one rides a 50 Ft wave and you wreck. what are the chances of survival? |

Like anything else in life...luck. I have seen 7/8/9 year olds surfing 20+ foot waves in Hawaii...myself included when I was young. And I have seen experienced surfers ride 6 foot waves and get hurt badly, broken legs, etc. For the most part...only someone with experience would ride a 40+ foot wave. Stay in the pipeline and you're safe....coming out is the problem...wipeout. Never been a death reported yet riding the 50+ by the pros. |

I feel for you more than me then Some of 12 footers is about all I'm good for. That double overhead stuff knocked the stuffing out of me on more than one occasion.
I will say one thing though...The 6 footers we ride in Nova Scotia (the frigid winter wasteland (Christmas day is always a blast) hit you with about the force of a 9 or 10 footer on the West coast...(at least the breaks I surfed around southern cali...)
That was the only time I actually got a chance to surf in warm water...always been a bit of a winter water baby in Canada. |
