|

Now, you might think I'm an a** for this forth-coming plan but tell me what you think: I want a short-time gig (about five months tops) to teach at a school because I plan to return to graduate school in August. I NEED to save up some cash for tuition, getting a car, and generally adjusting to life in the States after I've been gone for almost 2 years. Going back home now would be difficult since it takes freakin' forever to get a job and I won't save up the money like I would in Korea. How can I negotiate with a school for a short-term gig? Should I tell them the benefits of having a teacher short-term by not giving me airfare and severance? I I'm willing to accept this. I would think many directors would like this. I thought about going for a one-year contract and breaking it but I find this unethical and am afraid of the reprecusssions. Am I a**ed out of finding a job short-term?
Also theres an emotional reason to stay a little longer as well. I have a beloved Korean boyfriend and I really enjoy my life in Korea/Seoul so I want to stay as long as possible
If any of you have experience doing this let me know. It just seems that it would be very difficult to negotiate a job for such a short-term.
Now some of you might say that "why won't you just stay in Korea if you love it so much?" but you gotta understand that I really want to finish graduate school (I left half-way through!) and feel it is necessary to get my Master's. |

How about staying on where youre working now? Easier to get a short-term extension than a new short-term job. |

I wish! I really like my high school job and I asked...but they are cutting the whole foreign staff next year so there's no job for me |

I see. But the fact that youre here on the ground with some experience, its not a big stretch to imagine a hagwon director who'd welcome a few months service without the flight & severance concerns.
If youre upfront about your situation you might find a director willing to sponsor you to a sham one-year deal that would keep you legal with the understanding you'd be taking off early. Better that than just bolting.
Or just freelance & take your chances. |
