Any suggestions for a good, cheap, basic printer, for b and w documents?
Also, I know back home the replacement cartridges for printers are pricey. What do they go for here.

HP all the way... and not the cheapest one.

The cheapest printers cost as much as the cartridges to refill them do. Don't go that route. Spend a few extra dollars initially and you'll save a lot in the long run (not even that long... you'll make up the cost in one ink changing!). The cheapest printers are nothing more than ink dispensers! It's true!

I own an HP Deskjet 3820, and am very happy with it. It prints great color photos too, and I can buy refill ink for it.

I had the cheapest cylinder-shaped HP but sold it off because the ink cartridges only held 9ml of ink (less than half what mine now holds, I think) and the cartridges cost 50,000 won to replace both!!!!!!!!!!!! I think it's about the same to replace mine, and they hold twice the ink! I can refill them 3 times for like 15,000 won using 2 kits I buy (color and B&W).

Don't buy Epson because I hear the newer model software will lock you out once it says the cartridges are empty (I think this keeps you from using refills, as well). Screw them! I never liked their type-print quality, anyway.

Don't buy Lexmark. Go with HP. Open them up and see how much ink they hold.

Another nice trick.. after refilling my color cartridges, I learned that i had to use them often or they would dry up at the nozzle. The trick is to soak the cartridge in warm water for 5 or 10 minutes. Dry it off, and put it back in , and it will work again. You might have to repeat this process if you are like me and don't print again for several days.
