My school printed up a huge whack of brochures to promote our school. My boss wanted my CV so they could do a "and this is our white guy" section.

My degree is in child psychology but all my experience is with media and high tech companies. High tech might impress adults working for Samsung who want English lessons but it wasn't going to thrill the parents of a 10 year old. My major media experience (wrote 4 books for Reed Publishing, columnist for the Toronto Sun, columnist for Toronto star/Eye magazine, cartoonist for the Sun and the Washington Post, writer for CBC) I figured would impress the parents so I told my boss to highlight that stuff in the "and this is our white guy" section.

Now most Koreans have never heard of the Toronto Star or the Toronto Sun and would be unaware they are Canada's highest circulating newspapers and might not be as suitably impressed as I wish they were. I could be writing for the Hog Report as far as they were concerned. I told my boss to make a note that these were daily papers, which says something about their standing at least.

Right.

So I get the brochure back. Turns out, according to the brochure, I write for the Sun Dairy News. Okay. One step above the Hog Report but still. I'm going to start showing up in overalls, a straw hat, and carrying a hoe.

I worked as a TV producer for a CBS station back home for 8 years. The funny thing is when they start asking, "Why did you come here?"

As past editor of a Canadian weekly newspaper, I should take offense Smile (Community newspapers are the last home of cover-to-cover first-run local copy, often free of press releases and wire copy, at least award winners like the one I ran was).

But I too was surprised at what doesn't impress. I might as well have been a part-time copy editor for an advertising flyer for all that they care.

Why would journalists come to Korea? All the free time to write what we want, maybe even gain a pleasant distance from our other distracting passions, travel, a lot less stress, to mention just a few.
