Hi, all-

I ordered Jaurim albums 2,3, and 5, and am enjoying them very much, learning a lot of Korean from them, too. (Album 5 sounds and looks a lot like UA/Pizzicatto Five in Japan at times, or a less irritating Puffy, which gives me more hope for the future of Korean music). There are a lot of complaints about Korean music on this board, and while I don't shun all pop music, I tend to find the ballads and pop songs irritating even when they're catchy (I had "kimbap" by Jadu in my head for like, three days). The Korean music I have liked has been more on the rock side, like Cherry Filter, Nell, Deli Spice, and sometimes Seo Taeji. I bought a Drunken Tiger album and was less than impressed (because the whole album seemed too same-y, although there were a few good songs).

Has anyone gotten into older Korean music? I'm not talking about pansori or anything (although I think it's pretty neat), but music from the 70s or 80s, or earlier. When I was in Japan I gradually started developing a taste for some of the enka, and in China, it's fun to learn Teresa Teng (Deng Li Jun) songs. Are there any Korean groups from the last few decades that people like? I heard a song by the group The Sunflowers (Hae Ba Ra Ki) and thought they were quite cute, and a good Korean-learning aid, too.

Any other recommendations for folk musicians? Or Korean garage bands? Or even electronica? Let's find new music!

I'm going to hijack this thread. Is there any non-pop(ish) Korean music? Like hardcore, indie, etc?

Come one, hasn't anyone on this board been around since the 80's? I have this hope that since Korea wasn't as developed in the 80's and had all those student protests, that there might be some music from that time that was more sincere. During the 80's in China they had Cui Jian (the Chinese Bob Dylan?) and a number of others.

Who did Korea have?
