Yeah, so cars drive on the right side of the street in Korea, like they do in North America. But people seem to walk to the left, or at least they used to. I remember when I first visited Seoul and saw the little arrows in the subway and I realized that was why I always seemed to be swimming upstream. However, most of the new crosswalks in Seoul have their arrows on the right side. Most, but not all. There is a brand new crosswalk by my place that has the arrows on the right on one side, and on the left on the other!!!

In the parks as well, it is mayhem. Some are sticking with the traditional left side walking/jogging, while others are going with Korea's car culture and finally switching to the right side. As a foreigner I always feel I'm in the wrong no matter what I do.

Brace yourself, I have terrible news for you:
walking on the left side is alleged to be a hangover from the Japanese occupation.

Left or right...I see it everyday...left, right and in the middle! No respect for others...just myself and the heck with you attitude it seems. Nothing to do with what the Japanese did over 50 years ago! That's history. People need to learn to respect and show common courtsey.

If it leans to the left, so does your politics, or so it goes. According to the theory, I am a moderate.. hanging right down the middle. Ah, gravity.

I've noticed this too, and when I've asked my adult conversation students what side I'm supposed to walk on, none of them could answer me properly. People do seem to get a bit freaked out, though, when I try to pass them on the right.....so I think the left is the way to go.

Quite the opposite of North America.....took me forever to get used to!

What i do is this.

I walk side to side in a zig-zag fashion to make sure I bump into as many ajummas as possible.

We call it the slow moving ajumma body check game.

From my perspective, most Koreas don't tend to be able to walk in a straight line.
