|
|
Hello there,
I have just started a job and my Alien Registration Card is on the way.
I know I need to open a bank account. As a foreigner, what is a good bank to use? I would like to find one that has plenty of ATMs around, and does not charge too much of a monthly fee just to have the account. I think my school will be doing direct deposites into the account for my monthly pay.
Does anyone have any recomendations? I live near Yougsan Station and Samgakji. Any suggestions? Are there banks i should avoid? How about KB? or Worri Bank? They seem like big ones
Are there banks that are especially friendly and favorable to foreigners?
Please send help. |

KB is the biggest. I would go with them over Woori. I use Woori and I'm not 100% happy with them. They shut down their money machines for a week at one point during the holiday. |

Hi there, my husband deals with the Korea First Bank....he also has a Woori bank account...but the Korea First Bank doesn't charge service fees for making a withdrawl. The Woori bank charges 600 won after a certain time...evening withdrawls I believe. If you do decide to go with the Korea First Bank...the branch in the Posco building (between Seoullung Stn & Samsung Stn.)...hmm...if you get off at Seoullung station take exit one and keep walking straight you can't miss the Posco Building...it is on the left. One of the girls there speaks English really well. I guess I should say that I use the Korea First Bank.. |

Choose a bank which has the most tellers and the cheapest fees. As for service from the tellers, they are kind but at least 99% of them do not speak English.
If you decide to use your ATM card as often as possible, try to learn some basic Korean transaction vocabulary in order to withdraw, deposit, or transfer money. Some ATMs do not provide an English language service. |

When I last checked (Summer of 2003), there was just one BoA (in Seoul), but they only accepted company accounts, so we individuals are SOL.
Unless they changed policies, you'll have to nix that idea.

I use KB and Korea Exchange Bank KEB. Both have had no troubles in 5 years, but KEB also has branches in Vancouver and Toronto, so could help if needed back home |
