Just recently bought a 12" Powerbook, my first excursion into the world of Mac. The only decent optical (mouses? mice?) the store sold were these quasi-designer Microsoft jobs by Starck. For the most part it works fine, but every now and again when I move the mouse, the cursor starts to jump around on the screen and goes haywire for about a second or two. Is this just a problem with MS / Apple (in)compatibility, or does anyone else have similar troubles when using a mouse with a PowerBook? I did try to find a driver on MS's website but had no luck.

It's not a huge issue, but it is fairly annoying. I'd be willing to buy another mouse *if* I knew that would fix the problem.

Also, does anyone know how to make the click wheel give the "scroll" option when I click it in Safari? Right now it functions like "Alt-Tab" in Windows, giving options to jump to different windows.

Is it an optical mouse?

The most common problem with these mice is getting a bit of dust/lint/hair stuck under the sensor.
Turn your mouse over and check the red light- does there appear to be any obstruction?
Give a good blow to remove whatever is there and away you go.

The other problem might be the surface you are using with an optical mouse- if it is transparent, reflective, or even semi-reflective this can throw the sensor off.

The most common symptom for both of these problems is a 'jittery' and/or 'stuck' mouse cursor.

The mouse sensor is clean, being used on a proper mousepad. It just... goes weird once in a while.... Confused

(Uh oh, I think I looked at the little red light too long... Shocked ) hehehe

I have a powerbook as well and have experienced minor mouse trouble. My problem is with scrolling. When I scroll slowly, it jumps all around. The page may shoot up to the top or bottom. Seemingly random. I am pretty sure this is just a faulty mouse because my friend runs the exact same setup as mine and he has no trouble with his mouse.

Sorry, didn't really answer your question.
