I had heard a rumour that the newly built World Gym Asia (part of the World Gym of the US, isn't that Arnold's gym?) next to La Festa in Ilsan was offering free memberships to foreigners, but having talked to their salesmen a couple times as I carried my groceries home from Carrefour and never having it offered to me, I decided it wasn't true.
However, I wandered in yesterday to see about signing up (I was willing to pay) and a guy who spoke decent English popped out and asked if I was here about the foreigner promotion. So, I of course said, "yes" and he gave me a three month membership. Free, but with a 30,000 Won registration fee.
He asked me to spread the word to other foreigners because the promotion is ending this month, so this is what I'm doing.
It's huge inside, quite impersonal, obviously built for the masses. They have hundreds of machines and various classes in the mornings and evenings; yoga, pilates, spinning, etc. Although I wasn't impressed at all with the change rooms. No benches to sit on and they don't provide any towels, so I had to walk home dripping sweat yesterday because I didn't bring my own. The storage lockers are tiny (10,000/month) while the daily use lockers are huge. Overall if I had paid (I think it's quite expensive), I'd be disappointed, but the price was right.
On a side note, I wonder if they discriminate against non-whites? If a busload of factory workers showed up, would the policy change? Someone should test this. |
