Triple Dip Haunts Korean Economy
The specter of a triple-dip recession is beginning to loom over the economy, as its fragile recovery is overshadowed by various challenges including the cash flow crunch at credit card firms and the national political slush fund scandal.
Under a triple-dip recession, gross domestic product growth will slide back into the negative after two or three rounds of brief positive signs.
The economy, which is in the first recession since the 1997 economic crisis, has suffered from a horde of whammies throughout this tumultuous year.

Have you ever heard of a horde of whammies?
horde
1: a vast multitude
2: a nomadic community
3: a moving crowd
whammy (whammies)
1. A supernatural spell for subduing an adversary; a hex: put the whammy on someone.
2. A serious or devastating setback: "The triple whammy: government cuts, declining corporate giving, and less favorable tax laws" (New York Times). |

| Seriously these papers need to employ native speakers with some journalism backround. Once they start doing this, then people will start to take the papers a little more seriously. Now they are like a cheering/ whining news letter for Korea and not a newspaper about Korea. |

I thought it had something to do with that old game show. What was the name? They had little animated monsters called Whammies everywhere that would pull little pranks and stuff.
A "horde of whammies" would be a perfect way to describe a couple of my elementary classes |

The expression double whammy, whatever its origin, refers to two bad things happening at one time-- I got a double whammy when I dented my car and got a ticket. My guess is that the writer thought you could change around the expression and still have it make sense (a lot of bad things happening at one time), but you can't usually do this. We can't say "go out and paint the town orange." My guess, at least.

CEOs See Recession Spilling into 2006
Six out of 10 Korean CEOs projected Korea would experience an economic growth rate of below 3 percent next year, according to a poll released Sunday. Asked when they thought the economy would recover, 81 percent of the respondents replied "in 2006 or later," showing how four in five see little likelihood of economic recovery next year.

Economic Pessimism Governs Koreans' View of 2005
A poll conducted on citizens from 65 nations on how their respective economies would fare next year revealed that 62 percent of Koreans felt the economy would sag further. This made Koreans the second most pessimistic after the Greeks, 63 percent of whom felt the economy would slide in 2005 despite the publicity generated by the Olympic Games.

Exporters Losing Confidence for 1st Quarter
Korean exporters' business confidence for the first quarter of next year plummeted to the lowest level since 2002, reflecting the concerns spreading among local companies over the rising value of the Korean currency crippling their exports' profitability. The EBSI is an index gauging export condition prospects for the coming quarter. An index above 100 indicates that a greater number of businesses predict exports will improve and an index below 100 suggests that pessimists outnumber optimists.

Worst Consumer Sentiment: The majority of Korean consumers believe that their living standards are worse this year than during the 1997-98 financial crisis. Markedly, the consumer sentiment has worsened even among high-income earning households.
Record-High Consumer Debts: One of the key factors for the slump in domestic demand is household debt, which set an all-time high this year. Economists say the average Korean now has a relatively lower capacity to repay debt.
Strongest Won in 7 Years: The U.S. dollar sharply lost its ground to the Korean currency, falling to a seven-year low against the won to below 1,100 won.
