Yesterday I tried to record an LP to a computer. Record players by themselves don't generally have an amp so I went through an amp and then to the computer, but the quality was crap and there was a background buzz.

Does anybody have a setup that can do this?

If you got the line-level correct and the cabling was sound then it should have worked.

Did the MP3 recorder show a good, strong level during the recording?

What cable did you use from the hi-fi amp to the computer?

Yeah. You've probably nailed my problems right there.

From the turntable to the amp I used rca cables and from the amp to the computer I used 3.5 mm stereo cable. The MP3 recorder was just under the red for the recording so it was getting enough signal, just too much background crap.

Know a DJ who's set up to do this kind of thing?

what kind of computer?
laptops will give you way too much system noise.
desktop? unplug everything even the mouse while you record and shut down every program you don't need running - even virus and firewall progs (cos you'll be offline then anyway).

But eamo is right about cabling. Do you not have an mp3 player with a line in? This is usually a better way to go before going to the comp.

After that you'll need some quality noise reduction stuff but it'll cost you e.g. Adobe Audition.
