Some of you know that I have been looking into this, and just to let you know...
My Korean co-worker said that there is an office being formed that will start checking the legitimacy of foreigner degrees. Has anyone else seen this in the news? He heard it from the Kyonngi-do people. Not sure if it will be involving immigration or what yet, but sounds like it's definately not just Kyonngi-do. I didn't get many details, and will press for more. My co-workers were discussing it.
After the Konkuk University embarrasment, there is a big push for this (not sure who is doing the pushing).
Anyway, my co-worker said that they intend to be very strict about it -- sounded like Taiwan.
Personally, I'm all for it, and I think it's great. I have a feeling that MANY foreigners here teach with fake degrees. Getting rid of them can only make the job pool tighter, and perhaps raise salaries for others with legal degrees. |

| AWESOME! Something I called for in another thread. Please, check my degree and check everyone else's. Time to kick out the illegals, improve the conditions and the reputation of all those who are here legally. |

| Great idea but I think if there was really a new national policy it would be announced by someone other than Derrek from Dave's ESL Cafe. |

This is a good step. Checking for college degrees, that makes sense.
There are other countries who insist you send them a high school transcript, as well, indicating you both took and passed high school English.
Asking for that, in conjuction with your college degree and transcripts, that *doesn't* make sense, but I suppose if it's the law of the land, then ya gotta do what ya gotta do. |

I fear it'll mostly just make recruiters and employers more desparate and thus more willing to lie to potential hirees about the benefits and working conditions, which would negatively impact the majority of us in our future search for new positions. |

Its a great thing for those with real degrees. I wonder what % of the teachers here are illegal. 10%? 20%? 30%? Think of all of them leaving and creating a shortage of teachers. Demand will rise as supply drops and salaries should be picking up, as well as working conditions. I say its great. |

'xactly. But shouldn't the local embassy/consulate you go to for your visa have a list of accredited degree granting institutions. The Korean consulate in Seattle would not verify my Ontario university degree. I had to go back home to get that done. This, I thought, was the reason you had to go to the consulate/embassy closest to your degree granting institution. |

Actually, after that whole Konkuk thing, my boss went to all us foreign teachers and had us write down our universities, addresses, phone numbers and said he was going to make sure our degrees were legal. I had no problem...I'm legal but my coworkers were put off by the whole thing...hmmmmmm |
