I'd like to hear some of your housing arrangements. What's the best way to live in Seoul: flat or dorms? I would be 21 upon arrival, so at my age I'd prefer not to live with families but rather with people I can relate to, which would be people in their low or mid 20's, or I guess even late teens. Are there flats which are shared by 4 or 5 people? (the more the merrier for me) Is co-ed housing common, or are the sexes separated (for university aged people)? Do the natives still live with their parents, or will I find some to live with?
Here's how I live now in Toronto: 2 bedroom flat/apartment of 5 people (3 guys, 2 girls), aged 19-24. One is an exchange student from Germany. I'm extremely happy with what I have here and would love to have a similar experience in Korea. Perhaps just substitute the German exchange student for a foreign teacher. |

single housing is all the rage in korea.
check out the *freakiest waegook* thread on this forum for the reasons why.
a fair amount of the jobs offered here come with single, studio style flats. although, some are advertised with shared housing, up to 3 people in 1 flat. the other flatmates will be your co-workers, and may be co-ed.
if you are going to live in seoul, why bother with having flat mates you can't choose? it's not like seoul has a shortage of foreigners to meet.
if you teach in a uni, you may likely be forced to live in a dorm, usually single or very small double. and, yes, the sexes are segregated. |
