I was in Korea already when I signed last year. Am working out a renewal contract for next year, but they refuse to pay my airfare back in that contract.
Isn't it required by law? Even though I was here? |

Absolutely, they say what they said and they signed what they signed. They are only trying to save some money. Better you find another institute who will pay for the whole trip or use the return ticket to go home.
I remember my situation, I was lucky to go home, because my first institute went bankrupt and the second institute held my ticket. The second institute didn't act quickly enough and I was in the waiting llist for a while. Even if I failed to get a seat, the second school didn't want to be responsible despite holding on to the ticket. The business only wanted to save money and treat me as a number, that's it. I eventually got a seat, luckily.
If I were you, I wouldn't negotiate with them. Get the ticket and go back home. At the same time, look for another institute to set yourself up for next contract. That is what staying for 1 year is all about, getting what you deserve at the end.
If they want to keep you without returning and you really want to stay, then ask for some compensation from the unused portion of the ticket (the return part).
You have nothing to lose. |

You do know by law they are only required to pay for the ticket OUT of the country...everyone pays return because the industry has set that expectation but OUT is all that is required by law.
If I am wrong Gord or Grotto will let you know soon enough...
BTW: it's a contract...if you want it..put it in...negotiate...don't get what you want sign somewhere else...I know you likely already know that but it bears repeating...(It would be nice if the law was on your side so negotation wouldn't be that tough) |

That's my point...
I only am asking for return flight home compensation next year when I go back.
As it is written, they say that they don't want to pay for that.
Anyone have a link to the law?
Thanks. |

Derrek...been covered many a time...especially by me. Been there...done that. What is required is a ticket OUT of the country according to the sponsor form your sponsor signs with immigration. But...if your school is screwing you on an agreement you both had last year...why resign?!?! The school powers to be don't give a rat's rear end about you. |

I must not be making myself clear.
I am talking about my NEXT contract with them, which they want me to sign.
If I sign again with them, they don't want to pay any airfare for a return flight to leave Korea when that contract finishes. |

OK...now I get it.
Still...same applies as I posted. Many schools won't give a teacher a return ticket when they FINALLY leave the position even if they taught at the same place for 5 years.
The new school will pay for the flight to korea of course. And the departure.
Your school...I am assuming (a..s...s out of me) already paid for your original flight to korea? And when you finish...they will pay the departure.
I get where you are coming from.....but....no ticket I think is due.
Seems to me...if they are happy with you....and it's a private school....then the school owner can do what he/she wants with their money and buy you a ticket. But...a public school...taxpayers money..... No. |

No, they did not pay my ticket here. I was in Korea already.
My money comes from Kyonngi-do. My job is provided by a grant from them. That is a gov't. |
