| I am staying at a 4 star hotel, still in Pattaya, Koreans, Japanese, English, etc...etc..... So this morning a bus load of Russians arrive. I must say that most of the tourists usually stand in line and wait for things, the pushiest people so far have been a group of older Koreans in a group tour situation. But this morning the Russians BLEW THEM AWAY. They started at the juice bar, the Russians were filling up bowls, yes, bowls full of O.J, and bringing them back to their tables. Next came the main breakfast foods, plates of eggs, bacon, piled high, a trail of scrambled eggs led to their table. No joke. The salad bar was next, bowls of tomatoes, onions, even the ice! There must have been 30 in the group and the older group of Koreans looked shocked as well. I thought Koreans were pushy, but the Russians would stand behind the other tourists, and just push their way in. And as far as eating, I noticed a German couple next to me, sitting up straight, fork and knife in hand, their mothers would have been proud. The Russians were bent over their plates shoveling the food into their mouths. And.....the place smelled like a gym. Pretty funny though, just to sit back and watch. But the Russian girls were HOT! |

| That makes me sad. My sister travelled in Russia last year, and the povery was shocking. I'm sure it's a survival tactic, and you can bet you'd pay a pretty penny for a buffet in Moscow. |

| Like the Chinese, ordinary Russians are just now being able to travel far afield and Thailand is a heavily promoted destination for them as it's relatively cheap and easy to enter. And, of course, warm. |

| You should try riding the Moscow Metro. I've been carried up an escalator. |

HO CHI MINH CITY, 2003: I'll never forget the antics of a gaggle of Koreans when given a free hotel room for the night by the vietnamese airline after cancelling the last flight of the evening.
Back at the hotel, the group "representative" starts complaining that the aircon is substandard and after a fuss manages to get the rooms all changed. At the late night bar, the poor vietnamese bartender endures half an hour of ranting from an ajjoshi who buys a bottle of "whisukeee", opens it then wants to return it for full refund, claiming to be an expert on "whisukee".
At the morning buffet, the Koreans charge at the tables like the light brigade, shoving and elbowing their way to devour everything in sight. There is more wasted food left on their tables than they actually ate, and the cooks have to make an emergency batch of food for the other guests.
The free airport bus pitches up to out of control hysteria as the screaming Koreans scrum down to get on, filling the empty seats faster than you can look at them. Having played rugby for many years, I snap up a seat milliseconds before a wincing ajuma.
The short ride to the airport is filled with patronising oohs and ahhs as the Koreans look down on the inferior pedaloe pushing people outside the windows.
As soon as the plane doors are open, the stampede for the best seats and overhead lockers begins.
Its like being thrown into the middle of a kindergarten field trip. |

Well, that rang totally true till the bit about the stampeding for plane seats, which are fixed when they're booked ... |

| Yes, but the overhad compartments are not reserved. I learned the hard way when I discovered my overhead bin stuffed with somebody else's luggage. |

| Koreans ignore seat and locker reservations, same way they just scrawl whatever hurriedly on the arrival form. Its all just beurocracy to them, to be shoved aside. earliest bird gets the worm, unless you're willing to make a fuss about it. |

This, from a man who has posted many things critical of Koreans. I have seen them behaving badly, Russians too, but then again I have seen people of all stripes, black, white and brindle making asses of themselves abroad. I will never forget the cultural cringe I felt seeing Aussies in London's West End when I lived there. I also remember seeing a bunch of yobbo Brits in Bangkok in 1999. I have seen Germans putting towels over beach chairs at 4 in the morning in Greece and have seen Nigerians and Pakistanis behaving like potential rapists in a club here on new years eve. Having said all that, they are not representative of their people as a whole and often young lads out of the country for the first time. Still, its a fun holiday story to come home and tell the mates about the 'uncivilized foreign barbarians" you encountered on vacation.
Cheers

And most expats here give Koreans such a glowing impression of westerners.
