in the pedestrian underpass under seoul station.

there were about 500 people being fed rice and kimchi jigae-esque gruel by nuns and priests.

so poor people do exist here, eh? i thought i was in vancouver...

nah, i've been to seoul station maybe 5 times since i've been here, always at the train station, never the catacombs.

i wonder how many other people who are south-han-river-locked even know about this? like koreans? my students say they give money to poor people but i see one maybe once every two weeks, even going over to the other side of the moat.

it was a shock, i come up on one year here in one week, coming from the crappiest neighborhood in vancouver to insular gangnam. i used to see homeless people every day and worked with people who were 100 bucks away from being homeless all the time.

i just thought maybe a korean would have an argument like "homelessness? oh no... like SARS, kimchi wards that off too!"

Sure, Korean people know about it. I have seen it myself, way back in 1998. It's called ޽.

Man, you need to see some of Seoul. Not Kangnam, Seoul.

I hate Kangnam, plastic plastic plastic.

oh i've been all over seoul... but i've just not seen that kind of poverty before.

i mean... what do you do when you go around seoul? you get on the subway, you get out of the subway and look around, you don't stray too far from the subway unless you're looking for some tourist site.

gangnam is indeed plastic and insulated. i really don't like it here or the people who think it's cool. but hey, i signed on for another year. the money's good!

There are certainly less panhandlers in Seoul than in North American cities.

There's always a good menu at the one near the tunnel going from Shinyongsan and the electronics market. Some of those cats in line don't look too bad off to me. It's the lure of free food. May just jump in line myself. Push to the front of course.
