I have to use this series in all my classes from about 3rd grade to adult. It is dreadfully boring for them and often too difficult, but I gots no choice. Any ideas for ways to use it that will give it more educational value or at least be more interesting?
If you're unfamiliar with this series, each book (there are about 10 levels of books) is pretty much a series of 2- or 3-paragraph selections, about almost every topic, followed by five multiple-choice comprehension questions, sort of like the reading comp sections you find on standardized tests. |

I have some papers on metacognitive reading strategies that I used for one of my masters assignments.
During the assignment, I used my wife as a test subject and she said that they really helped her out.
PM me and I will give you my phone number and I can explain some of the strategies...and I will look in the attic for the papers so you can read them if you want.
don't worry about the name...i live in incheon...so the call wouldn't be long distance... |

| I've used a few of the lower level ones before, the ones with pictures. We used to always put a "picture sentence" above the picture. And we used to make sentences using new or not so familiar vocabulary. We had several spelling and dictation quizzes. I'd use sentences out of the book. Sometimes it was OK. Every kid would read a bit. We'd do 2 or 3 of those little stories in about 30 minutes. Then something else, game or whatever. |

I only like the lower level books Prep1 - MSRA.
What I usually do is :
Show the picture and draw out the vocab that they know.
Predict/guess what the story is about.
Read the story to them and ask them what the story is about. Maybe they will only say a keyword or name but it works their listening.
Read the story with them intensively. Explain define all the words or phrases they dont know.
Make a cloze/blanks in the story and thet them fill in the blanks with their own new story. Usually I have the beginning of the sentence and they fill in the end part and their names in the story. I model it for them with me doing the writing and then put them in groups to write their own story that is different.
Bingo. Make up a bingo sheet and have the students write the words of the story randomly in the boxes. Then when they have the same word rock-s-paper to choose. The winner has to make a sentence using the word or 3, 4, or 5 words depending on their level or they have to make a past/pres/future tense or what ever you are teaching.
