I am going to Hong Kong for Chinese New Year and am wondering what intersting sites there are and good clubs and shopping areas? I have done some research on the net but want to know from those of you who have been.

Thanks.

Hong Kong during Chinese New Year will be a zoo! There should be some interesting holiday-realted goings-on such as decorations, parades, fireworks, etc. (the fireworks show over Victoria Harbor is supposed to be an awesome sight). However, a lot of things maybe closed, and nightlife won't be at it's prime because it's a time to be with your family.

There really isn't much to see in terms of interesting historical sights and such. Go up to the mall on Victoria Peak and catch some vies of the harbor, check out Kowloon for some more views and people-watching, food, etc. Stroll around the different neighborhoods of HK island, such as Central, Wan Chai, and Causeway Bay. IMO, the Hong Kong experience is about taking in the life of the city rather than sightseeing, because there isn't really much sightseeing to be done.

If you're up for a day-trip, Macau is only a short ferry ride away. Definately worth a day, but not more.

Get the double decker bus from Admiralty over the peak to Stanley (don't get the one that goes through the tunnel) Sit on the right or left (forget which) of the top deck and hang on to your seat... it's a wild ride. In Stanley you can wander around the market.

Head out to Lamma island and wander around. You can pretty much walk all over it in a day. Can be peaceful.. though not sure what it will be like at Chinese New Year.

Central's a good area, good Irish pub within walking distance of good Cajun restaurant. That's going back to 2002, can't be sure they're still there.
