I've only been here a few weeks, so my scope of Korean graffiti culture is really limited... but, I was wondering if a graffiti style that imitates typing is popular among students and the general public. for example, this is one a wall in my hagwon " (-o-);; " ...written just the way it is typed. I would think it would make sense in such a technology focused culture for a technological inspired style to emerge... has anyone else noticed this? |

You don't see much around here. I'm always amazed too how they stick up cool show posters with just a bit of tape and no one takes them down to hang on their walls. In any city in North America you'd cover the whole back with paste.
As a culture they're not really into personalizing things or spaces. I mean my desk at work, my desk at any place I've worked, is always surrounded by toys and posters and a lava lamp... Here I've noticed my Korean coworkers don't put any personal effects on their desks.
Various desks/offices from the past (a few things blurred to hide my ID):

I have a lot of flexibility in my class topics for discussion and since my students really love hip hop I decided to do a brief history of hip hop lesson (not that I have ANY authority on this whatsoever) ... so I introduced the idea of graffiti and talked a little about the graffiti wars in New York City in the old days and we discussed why people might make graffiti. Some of the students seemed really excited by the idea... so maybe some more will some up in my neighborhood - or maybe they'll go home and tell their parents that the American told them to make graffiti and I'll get fired. |

graf has only really been here for 10 years as opposed to the 30 years plus in the west. there are a few decent writers out here, but the law here is so much tighter than the west. thus 90% of the work is all legal. I'd love to see the street art scene expand here, as there is more potential for it than graf. anyone wanting more in depth details on where to check out some graf pm me. |

You wanna see REAL graffiti, go to Prague! It's an art form there. It came (so my students told me) from the communist era, when kids (and not only kids!) would go out and voice their opinions about the government. Check out this site!

As opposed to New York City, where people just do it halfheartedly?

NYC is the Mecca of graffitti. Like Jesus was born in Bethlehem, Graffitti was born in New York. There are graffitti showcases in art museums in cities -- big and small -- all over the world; but, as far as the artform goes, NY is the planet.

The best collection of graffiti I have come across in Seoul, has been at the downstairs 'two hands' bar in Sinchon. There is some stuff there that is actually interesting, well esp. after three pitchers.
I think that it may have been erased, or maybe I was to drunk to notice, but someone wrote in marker above the mens urinal (the one positioned outside that has a view of the next door roof):
"Barbara Bush works in here. Your 100w, will not pass Halliburton"
