I agree that is a big reason, but not the main one.

i think it's diet, but i think we'll see koreans get a lot fatter soon.

there was a documentary on the other night (it was in korean, so my husband was translating here and there). basically, it said that asians have to be careful because genetically, they are more likely to gain weight than western people if they eat the wrong kind of diet. i wish i could have understood more of it because it seemed interesting.

Diet followed by activity for sure. Lot of my kids are little butter balls these days.

Some Koreans also appear slim to us even when they are not, because of their smaller bone frame. When the clothes come off at the bathhouse you can see that some that seem slim are in terrible shape and many have flab around their waists.

Obesity rates in Korea are growing at a rapid pace. I did some research on this for a paper I never did manage to get published Embarassed and found that the rising obesity rates and the rising popularity of fast food chains are closely linked.

Korean & Japanese who grew up in North America tend to be bigger then the ones who grew up locally, so I'm guessing diet is the most important reason.

I think its genetics..
they would have been poor from chosan right up till the 1980's
their diet also was rice plus this was a famine driven country and well below poverty..
once PARK CHUN HEE drove the koreans out of poverty the koreans started to eat MEAT! then during the 90's American businessman worked with local food manufactors and started to increase the supply of snacks, fast food. baskin robbins, BK, KFC, and koreans took to it like flies take to shit

so they are now getting fatter.. and the genetics are changing. so in the next 50 years there will be alot of fat people here.. of course more thin!
becuase koreans are still very traditional so most house holds will keep to korean food..
KIMCHI!!!! Wink

Would you mind taking some photographic evidence for us? For science, you understand...

I guess it all depends on what you mean by "fat". Not having a super model body and a bit of fat around the mid-section wouldn't be "fat" compared to spending 10 minutes in Orlando and finding you don't have enough fingers and toes to count the number of bubba fat people who walk by 10 minutes.

Errr, when you eat more fatty food and then get fatter, that's not your genetics changing- that's called your diet.

Laughing True enough. But I've been noticing quite a few huge Korean people lately too. I haven't seen any who need to be carted around in wheel chairs yet, which is something I have seen in (coincidence?) Orlando! Seaworld, actually. My rather humourous but tactless brother aptly called them "Land orcas," which I didn't want to find funny... I really didn't.

Those of you who have been here for 4 years or more, haven't you noticed a rapid increase in the number of overweight Koreans?

They don't eat much meat. One of the reasons why I almost never feel full after a typical Korean meal.

Over time it becomes...?!! On a geological or evolutionary timescale perhaps it does, but not as that phrase is normally understood.

This is why language gets corrupted so easily, because of the tendency of idiots to spout BS about things they know nothing about. This is how Konglish came into being.
