Since Thursday morning I've been sicker than I can ever remember being. Anyone else have the pleasure of coming down with this nasty virus? I was unlucky enough to pick it up from the little girl, who puked in the New Year.
And it's currently showing no signs of letting up. Still, I refuse to visit the doctor. I know the over-the-counter pills I picked up at the pharmacy are no match for antibiotics, but still.

Oh man...go to the doctor!!....you probably don't realize how dehydrated you could be. I had the same thing just before Christmas and I definitely felt sicker than I ever had in my life. I started to feel it on a Sunday and threw up all the food I ate on Sunday. I went to work on Monday and barely made it through the day, threw up all of Monday night and could barely stand when I woke up on Tuesday.
I actually spent about 10 hours in the hospital. The doctor diagnosed me and prescribed me some medication, gave me a shot in the "hip" (ass) and hooked me up to an IV (for the dehydration). After the IV I was told I could go home but when I stood up I passed right out. The nursed carried me back to the bed and I was blind for about 10 minutes....so scary. My vision came back but was really blurry for about 10 minutes. The doctor said it was due to dehydration and they hooked me to another IV. I had a diet of water, orange juice, and soup for two days before I moved back into solids. Don't take gostro-entritis lightly because it can develop into much more severe digestive tract problems if not treated properly. |

| I second I Am Wrong's advice. Don't bother with a clinic. Good god, man, get yourself to a proper hospital, get some fluids pumped into you and get some meds. I think you'll find yourself much healthier, much faster thataway. |

It should be noted that I neither feel nor see any signs of dehydration (dizziness, dark urine, rapid heartrate). There's no vomiting involved (nausea like no tomorrow, yes, but I have a fortified stomach -- or gag reflex) and I'm keeping all of my fluids down. It's the other end that's giving me grief. Using the can an average of 20-30 times, day and night, can become a tad tiring.
Still, if I'm not fit for work tomorrow, I'll see a doc.

i just recovered from what i believe was the "stomach flu." i didn't go to the doctor because i've heard antibiotics don't do much for this and it seldom lasts more than 2 days. also, dehydration wasn't an issue because i wasn't vomiting -- only a loose stool -- and able to hold down liquids. i've never had an abdominal problem like this before even traveling in mexico and such. it started wednesday afternoon with a sore neck -- i couldn't turn it all the way without pain shooting up it and i hadn't done anything to make it sore. i felt tired and listless that night. thursday i woke up stiff and achey and tired, but still went to work. all day at work i was getting stomach cramps and felt bad but didn't need to use the bathroom. i also had a total loss of appetite. as soon as i got off at 3, i had to go to the bathroom and that didn't stop until i went to bed that night at 12 (every 30 min-an hour) or so. i was so achey it was uncomfortable to just lay in bed. friday it was more of the same: cramps, weakness, achiness, no hunger, neck pains and stiffness, etc. i bought some over the counter immodium and lots of gatoraid and just let my body fight it. staurday morning i felt a lot better, but a little weak because of lack of food. i finally was hungery again and went out for some noodle soup.
drink lots of apple juice, water and gatoraid. eating solid food will only add to your misery. buy some medicine. if it persists after 3 days or you are vomitting and unable to hold down any liquids, call a doc. wew, i'm glad that's over! |

If it is indeed a virus, then that is correct. Antibiotics kill "biotic" organisms (ie, bacteria). Viruses are not "biotic" and thus cannot be killed by antibiotics. However, you can't always be sure it is stomach flu (virus). Sometimes these kinds of illnesses can be stomach infections (bacteria), which can usually be solved with 500mg of Cipro twice a day for three days and avoiding greasy or oily foods that bacteria feed on. If you have a major problem with your stomach, it's always best to see a doctor to have it professionally diagnosed. The presensce of white blood cells in your feces is usually a sign of a stomach infection. |

pretty much half of the teachers at my school have been sidelined for at least 3 days apiece with something very similar to what's been described here.
i only had a minor bout of seol-sa, mostly due to the fact that i had it extremely bad about 6 months ago and i think my immune system has had more practice than most. but this particular strain has been a very debilitating one, according to the people it's felled like saplings. |

Well, seem to be getting over this one now . . .
Finished work late on Friday, & wasn't feeling well, but wrote it off to working on a friday night. Sat afternoon, C & i went to Outback for a late lunch. We were supposed to meet some other posters here for a friend's b-day party in Hong-dae, but I was still feeling bad (and at that time, it was snowing, & C & I almost had a van flip over the median & roll on top of us - hit the car in front instead).
yesterday, slept in (my Sunday work had been cancelled in advance, fortunately), but we had to do a Costco run. Barely made it through that. A friend came over for a few, but the fever/cramping/nausea had only gotten worse. Luckily, I hadn't put much of anything inot my system, so nothing much to come out.
My 'cure' - 2 long (1 hour+) hot baths, 3 cups of eggnog, 2 shots of brandy, an oxycontin, 2 Nyquil night gel caps, 5 squeezes of goldenseal, and 12 hours of sleep.
I feel vaguely fuzzy/worn out, but seem to be over the worst of it now. Just in time for work - yea!
Regards,
Glen |

| I have been ill since Thrusday. The problem with me is that I am not in the least hungry. If I do eat the food seems to make me feel worse. Trouble sleeping too, now draging my ass through the day.. one more class which I now notice I am late for. |

| If it is really gastroenteritis you should definitely see a doctor. I had a nasty bout of it in France in 2000. It spreads like wildfire. You should definitely stay home from work as you're guaranteed to spread it to your coworkers and students if you go to work. A diet low in (or void of) oils and acids usually helps, as does drinking lots of liquids. |

Well, I wound up through it just fine, after my crash out. A little fuzzy that day, but chipper yesterday/today.
This morning, tho, Christina woke up & promptly puked her guts out. Informed me of a couple of late night bathroom runs (pun unintended, but appropriate). Cramping & aches starting.
She's staying home for now; i'll take her to the hospital if neccessary later. It is not the virus per se that concerns me, but her pain threshold is on the lower side.
Also, she was teaching a full day yesterday - REALLY concerned for her students & co-workers.
Guess if it isn't already in your neck of the woods, will be soon enough. Hak-won system & apartment setups almost guarantees it.
Take care,
G. |

I get hit by something similar once a year...been going on for three years now. Unbearable stomach pain and constant vomiting with profuse sweats / no fever. I've done 40 thousand dollars in MRI's, CTscans and other related tests and the gastro says he doesn't know what's wrong with me...it's not crohns, it's not colitis, nor is it IBS...he said I look healthy but for some reason I get these attacks. The first time it ever happened to me, I was in the hospital for almost a month, lost 30 pounds. They thought it was a virus that took time to pass through my body. I couldn't eat solid foods, they had to pump me with IV fluids for the dehydration.
The only thing that stops the pain is demoral...and then the pain and nausea goes away as quickly as it came...like a phantom killer.
Dude that was crazy about the hot baths...I've been using the hot bath treatment in the hospital and the doctors couldn't get over it...why do you take hot baths mr. SF? they asked me...Because it's the only thing that helps!!! |
