yup, chi-chi is right. I came here with 500 bucks to my name and got by fine my first month here- just need to pay for food and entertainment for the most part. Don't think I would have been able to do that in Japan.

If cash is your primary motivation, you might be more interested in Korea. You can live fairly comfortably and save up a big chunk of change. If you're more interested in your environment and surroundings, Japan probably will be more to your liking.
