Stand-up comedy is a sorely underappreciated artform.
That said, does it exist in Korea? Are there any clubs etc. in Korea that feature stand-up?
For years, during my time here, I felt that something essential was missing from my life. It just hit me this evening that it's stand-up comedy. It's calling me now like the crack was calling Pookie.
PS - I just flew into Incheon International Airport this morning. I masturbated on the flight over, and boy are my arms tired.

In Korea I think they call it "gag concerts". There's some comedy in Hyehwa, however it's all in Korean. I suspect Korean comedy is very different from Western comedy. It's mores slapstick. One guy pretending to be a drooling idiot and the other guy slapping him for his stupid ideas. It's not so much about making fun of ideas we hold or politicians. Maybe because Koreans are always prepared to be offended. One Korean president actually had to give comedians permission to make fun of him. And when they did, he ended up not liking it and rescinded the permission. Remember this is a land where it's illegal to put up a web site parodying a politicians during an election.
Woodstock, I think, in Itaewon had/has some regular open mic nights, music and spoken word. However, I've heard that the crowds are rude. The spoken word portions are ignored and people talk. The only time they pay attention is when they can't talk over the music. I get that enough in my classes so forget it.
I used to do open mic comedy in Seattle and I was surprised how easy it actually is. You write a tidy 4 minutes of comedy, down a beer, your name is called, you get up on stage, the lights block out the audience, you do your material, you get laughs. It's a pretty great experience. And if you can't write 4 minutes of something funny, you're in a coma. You don't even have to write 4 minutes of really funny stuff. People come to comedy clubs because they really, really want to laugh. It's amazing what they'll laugh at. |

Wow! It's the expat community's version of the Phantom of the Opera, panthermodern.
The world needs your cynicism my grumpy friend. Don't disappoint.
