So birthdays are rolling around and I want to send people new movies on DVD (Oceans 12, Blade, etc). Can my BT'd files play on a DVD player (norht american)?

Of course they can. Anything you burn is not encoded.

Also, try here to see if they can modify their DVD player to be region free. All I had to do to mine was open the cd drawer and push 9999 on the remote and choose region 0 for region free.

SO, if I just throw Blade 3 into nero saying burn to disk, my mates in the states will be able to pop it in their DVD player and watch it? F'ing awesome if thats the case (Btw, DVD as in attached to TV, no DVD attached to computer)

If you have the DVD and want to crack the protection and make it region-free, use DVD Shrink. Back up to ISO on the Hard drive. Then use Nero Vision Express SE to burn the ISO to a DVD. Both applications are very easy to use and can be DL'd off of PtP.

If you downloaded some video files off of PtP or FTP, then skip DVD Shrink and go straight to Nero VE.

I have a bunch of movies that I used DVD shrink to copy. I want to put them on another DVD and put them in the home theatre. Now I can only play them on the computer. I tried DVD Decrypter without success. I keep getting an error. You say Nero should solve this problem?

So I should just copy the Shrunk DVD onto the HDD, then use Nero to copy to DVD and it'll be whatever region I tell it? Cool. Now I have to go to the YS Electronics market and see dude about Nero..

Scarneck, are the DVDs you are using compatible with your DVD player?
Perhaps you're using DVD+R (or DVD-R) and your player doesn't support it... some DVD players are better than others in this respect.

My Philips (with a region-free hack- the model that has been talked about a lot on this forum thanks to Walter Mitty) takes 8x DVD-Rs just fine (I use those because they are the cheapest 8x ones I can find; They're so generic they don't even have a brand name on them- just some serial numbers).

I do the following, and have never had a problem (there may be faster, easier, better ways of copying, but like I said, I've never had a problem).
Disclaimer: It's not illegal to make a back up copy of a DVD you paid for.

1. insert DVD to be 'backed-up'.

2. Run DVD shrink. Select open disc. select the correct optical drive if you have more than one. DVD shrink will take anywhere from 1-5 minutes analysing the disc.

3. DVD shrink throws up a menu which is the analysis of your DVD. De-select anything you don't want (Potuguese audio, hindi subtitles, etc.)

4. Select "Back up" disc. Make sure you're backing up to a HD or a HD partition with enough space. Make sure the file is titled as you want it, and make sure it's in ISO format. select OK/Next/enter or whatever it's called.

5. AT THIS POINT there should be a pop up asking you about regions and the option for making ayour back up disk region-free. Read it carefully, it usually asks you 2 things- what region is the disc to be copied from, and would you care to make your back-up region-free. Select appropriately.

6. It will take anywhere from 30-90 minutes (possibly longer in some cases) to back-up your DVD. Now you will have an ISO file on your HD. Exit DVDshrink.

7. Open Nero Vision Express and select "Open saved project or disc image". There will be pop up allowing to navigate to the file you want to use. Make sure the file type option is switched to ISO or you won't be able to find your file. Select your file.

8. A new screen will come up- select "burn" in the lower right corner. (N.B. on this screen are options, but for my copy of Vision Express I've discovered that trying to re-name the volume label will cause the program to crash). Burning a DVD will varying depending on the size of the ISO file, your PC's speed, the speed of your media, etc. but for me it takes anywhere between 8-20 minutes for a feature film DVD.
