so i can wire my money back home. I've been doing this for the past three years to pay off my student loans, and every year you have to go back in the bank and renew your registration. Each year it's been the usual hassles of the bank employees not knowing what i'm talking about, then not knowing the procedures, then after 10 phone calls finally figuring out which form needs to be filled out, and after a good hour I'm along my merry way to resume payments on my debts. Mind you, sending money via interent is cheaper-10,000won fee compared to 20,000 won to do it in person, which also means no waiting in line and not having to fill out the same form each month. Well, january has come around again, so i return to the bank to do the same routine, yet this time, I'm informed that there's a korean law that says that only foreigners who have lived here for FIVE years can send money through interent banking. Funny, I've already been doing this for the past three years. So, they tell me, well, the bank employee must have made a mistake. Well, I explain to them, it wasn't just ONE bank employee, it was many, for I dealt with different people each time i did it, and they each made at least 5 phone calls trying to figure out how to renew my registration. So, i let them know that i will close my account with their bank, seeing how they're not professional enough to know their own rules or the Korean rules that are supposed to guide bank policy. I'm sure the next bank won't be much better, but that was my way to let them know how dissatisfied i was with their professionalism (lack of). For those who are curious, this was Wooribank, though I'm sure every bank here is the same. No wonder why Korea isn't a major player within the global world. |

your last line is very true.
but at the same time, ending your business with them is not the way to send a message to them. i say keep going there and cause them to run around like headless turkeys.
then they may realize all the extra work they have to do at the expense of policy.

Yeah, being quietly and politely insistent has worked for me most of the time with my bank. I now have 2 credit cards, a million won limit, and various other things that I was told initially were just not possible. They tried to charge me one time for researching a charge on one of my credit cards that was charged in Thailand- in the end they handled the whole thing without a fee. I didn't take no for an answer, but I didn't argue either, I just said that I would not pay the charge, and two days later they called me to say the search had been done. |
