A friend of mine is buying a minidisc and I have been thinking of buying an MP3 player. Could people share their preferences? I would also appreciate some advice on which models to go for and where I should buy them.

I would go for an ipod.
i hear they are great.
if you get an mp3 i would get one with over 1 gigabit. maybe 1o or 20.
WOuldn't even think of bothering with one of hte smaller ones.
I have an md player. I like it, but when i bought it the mp3 players at the most had 128mg memories and that is just too small in my opinion. |

we did this a few weeks ago....
nevertheless, i vote for ipod. don't buy the 10gig model (like i did) coz it doesn't come with all the extras, like carry-case, dock, and remote control. these are really handy and buying them separately is expensive. get the next size up - 20 gig i think (RIDICULOUSLY HUGE!!!)
i am inseparable from my ipod. i only take it off to shower... i dropped it hard the other day and faqed up the hard disk. apple replaced the unit no questions asked. |

Gord why do you think Netmd's are better?
I like mine but i would rather not have to change disks all the time.
I wouldn't mind a something like an mps player that could carry several thousand songs. |

Durability and battery life. An iPod is nice in that it's a huge amount of songs in one place, but it's not durable and can be destroyed if dropped even once. As well, it's got a battery life of only six hours and up until two weeks ago, replacing the battery was simply not an option after it died as it cost $255US. Now you can replace it for only $106. If my NetMD unit battery dies, it's 20,000 Won for a new unit that I can buy at any Sony store. Plus the battery in my unit is good for 12 hours or so at regular speed, or over 40 hours if I use the EP mode (while EP can cram 5.5 hours on a disc, the sound quality takes a hit so I never use this mode).
Plus the NetMD comes with a battery adaptor with it so if the rechargable battery dies on the road, you can toss in an AA and be back in business.
Durability and battery life are more important to me than being able to hold a bazillion songs in one place. |

My choice is one of the smaller MP3 players- one that relies on static ram rather than a hard drive. No moving parts, and
I find 196-256 MB plenty for everyday/weekend use.
If that's not enough you could always buy a regular discman that supports MP3 format- the cheapest option by far.
There are so many options- you have to decide what's best for your purposes. |

That's exactly what I have for driving in the work van and when I'm at the job site. With a wireless radio antenna that can just broadcast the music to a radio station, it's a cinch. I tend to be hard on little gadgets like Palms, MP3 players, etc, so losing one of these means I'm out $30 instead of hundreds for a good MP3 player. |

| I use my MD player for discovering new music. I subscribe to a really high sound quality internet radio (Music match platinum - 9.95 us a month) They offer artist on demand, and artist match, so you type in some artists you like and it will play similar genres. They also have era radio, so you can type in a year, and it will play only music from that year - all this in cd quality. So I hook up the MD, record a bunch of stuff, and then go through and edit to keep what I like. This helps me discover new artists. If I really like an artist, then I go download some mp3's (or buy the CD). |

| You can trade minidiscs with your buddies and never worry about losing them (they're cheap). |

There'll be disagreement on this, but I think of minidisc as a dying technology-- it never did catch on in north America. To me, your best choice is either an mp3 player or a CD player which accepts mp3 CDs. If you want portability and ease of use, go with the mp3 player. But I will probably eventually buy a CD-mp3 player as I can burn my own discs for 80 cents and carry around 170 songs at a time instead of whatever I can jam onto an expensive chip. As I'm lazy and never jog, tiny size isn't such a priority for me. Although my girlfriend often complains about tiny sizes, for some reason.

Agreed. I don't like non-standard formats, and that's what the mini-disc is. Not to mention, you get larger capacity on a regular CD-R and they're cheaper. |

After having a Net MD player i would never go back to a Discman. To big skips to easily and not as durable and the battery life is terrible. On my MD I have a rechargable AA battery that came with it and that lasts a long time. If i have a regular AA it lasts 46 hours. i think the rechargable battery doesn't last as long.
I think Gord made some good arguments for MD or Mp3.
When i bought mine i was about to go back packing and didn't have the luxary to change songs regularly. (something i wouldn't want to bother with even if i could.) I think 128 was about the most memory i could get at the time and the cost of extra memory cards. ouch.
I set my MD for medium capacity and i can fit just over 2 Cds with out much loss of sound quality.
My MD is tough. I have dropped it more times than i can think of and it still works fine. And it has really good antiskip protection. It has only skipped on my 2 or three times and i use to take it jogging all the time. Try that with your discman. |

MP3/CD players - sound good, convenient, cheap...
Not good if you're jogging, but for any other situation, the locally produced Iriver units are pretty hard to make skip. 150,000 for a really good one. |
