Does anyone have any experience as a single parent in Korea with a 3 year old? Checked the archives without much luck.
Here is the deal. My wife is Filipina and in the Philippines. I have been in the US for the last 4 months, letting our son get to know his American family. I taught for a few years in Thailand until recently.
Instead of getting a ticket to go all the way to the Philippines and leave him there and then head up to Korea(the cost also is huge!), I would rather go with my son to Korea and start work while my wife waits to get her visa in order to join me.
How much is childcare and how available is it?

Dutch among others have commented on it.. if I can repeat his post from memory.. I believe it was approximately 800,000/month for 8 hours a day every weekday for a Filipina nanny.
Just an aside, did you teach in Mexico City for awhile? I knew (online) and emailed an American for awhile who use to teach in Mexico before marrying a Filipina and moving to Thailand to teach where they had a child. |

You would have a few options for childcare:
1. As Tiger mentioned, you could get a full-time nanny for about 800,000 a month. No language barrier.
2. You could find a trustworthy Korean halmoni who would charge 400,000-500,000 won a month. Difficult to find someone you trust.
3. Send him to a Korean Orinni Chib (Daycare). Full-day would cost about 300,000 won a month. Lots of kids to play with. Available everywhere.
4. If you get a job with a kindergarten program, have your son join that program. Probably free. |

Thanks for the posts so far, I am the same guy that Tiger Beer mentions. I have been banging around on the Dave's Cafe since 1998.
My son is pretty good around lots of kids and he adjusts fairly easily to new places. He has lived in Thailand, the Philippines and the USA. I can't imagine Korean Day Care being any worse than Day Care in the US and if it is even half as good as Thai Day Care then it is more than I could ever hope for.

I had a friend that took her kids to Korean daycare. They were treated horribly. One was 6, the other was about 1. The daycare people would never change the baby's diaper. He developed severe diaper rash. Apparently American baby poop is dirtier than Korean poop. They barely fed the kids. They would hit her daughter. The parents finally took them out of the daycare center, and they mad arrangements with a coworker's mother.
That's probably the worst case scenario. It was Pohell after all. Just be careful, dude. If your kid is a foreigner, expect him to be bullied by the wonderful children at the daycare. |

Thanks for the headsup vlcupper, my son doesn't look like a foreigner to me, but looks like a foreigner to everyone else. No one can quite figure out what nationality he is. (He is part Filipino, Part Chinese, Part Scottish, Part Irish, Part Native American, Part ?????)
I dont think the Korean kids can bully him any worse than the 3 year old wenches in training do here in America. I could tell a funny story or two, but I won't bore any of you.
As I said, I can't imagine a Korean day care being as bad as some I have seen in the US and if they are even half as good as the Thai daycares then George is in for a treat.
About food? George eats anything. How many 3 year olds cry for cucumbers, cabbage and watermelon? |

He'll be fine in a Korean daycare. We haven't had any problems in the three years my son has been going and he definitely looks "foreign" to the other kids. 3 years is a great age too. He'll pick up Korean in no time. |
