Yes, if there were ever a great place for financial rehab, Korea fits the bill. Before I came to the ROK, my finances were a mess. Credit cards, loans, nearly zero in savings, etc. Yet, I've been able to rehab my financial life here and, in the future when I do depart, I will be able to start over in superior shape.

The free rent is the thing that makes all the difference. I realize that a 2 million salary is not that much money...but if budgeted properly, a great amount of it can be saved. Of course, I could make more at home but with the cost of rent plus the increase in working hours plus the transportation expenses and generally higher cost of living, I wouldn't be able to bank such a significant amount. I've been chipping away at the stone here and each month I get stronger financially.

Sure, Korea has tons of things that drive me crazy. Things that make me wonder about the aggregrate IQ of the place...but then I realize my situation and my future goals and it certainly adds a spring to the step and makes the daily irritations minimal. I certainly don't expect to stay in Korea forever but I'm going to take advantage of it for as long as I can. I know that the industry itself is destined to reach its zenith one day...but for now, I'll just continue to get stronger........

I absolutely agree! Although I didn't have financial woes when I went to Korea, I was able to save a ton of money in the year and a half I was there! No rent, no car, low taxes and lower cost of living all added up to a lot more money in my pocket. With the money I saved while in Korea, I was able to buy a house (albeit small) back home. Very Happy

One of the major goals I have for coming to Korea... although I'm not just here for cash money... is to pay off my student loans. Add on the fact that you can make some friends, learn a new culture, and get some life education as well... it all adds up. Quality of life is another issue to consider, and time. I can achieve some goals much faster in Korea than I ever could in Canada in the current employment climate.

I view this as an oppourtunity. Now everyone wait till I get jaded after a few months. Wink

i've met people who've paid off 20,000 dollars in debt in a year.

it is possible, just be disciplined.
