I went to this musical on Saturday night and was really impressed by it.
So much so, that I did up a small lesson for my discussion classes.
Feel free to use this (or discuss it).

I've read a little about this, and was wondering how people reacted to it. Thanks for posting it.
One question: I heard the main character gets raped then forgives the guy. To me, that would sink the play in any country in the West. It just seems too...foreign (?). Any thoughts? |

You heard right... she get rapped and then... well, I'm nto sure baout falling in love but she does rely on him for help.
The translations were not spot on so I'm not entirely sure on it all.
I would however recommend it though if it comes back. |

I was interested in seeing this but I read a review where it said it has a romance between the woman prisoner and a guard and a scene where a prisoner gets their hand cut off, neither of which would ever happen in a real camp according to North Koreans. I mean if you're going to make a musical about a very serious topic like this it seems cheap to sensationalize it with gratuitous romance and violence. It's as if Hollywood had made a musical out of Solzhenitsyn with Judy Garland in it (well sort of). |
