Im sorry if this has been discussed to the ground. I just scane through FAQ and couldnt find anything useful. I have a cat, and at the end of the year i want to take him back to Canada. Has anyone done this before? What is the exact procedure? Where do i go to fill out forms? And does the animal have to go into quarantine? I am assuming he has to have all immunizations up to date as well. I would really appreciate any help. I would like to be on the ball, and have everything prepared so i dont rush and possible miss out on taking him home! Thanks a bunch! -shutterfly

i'm taking my dog home in less than a month...you need two certificates, one is the rabies-free certificate and one is a certificate of health. they need to be translated into english (your vet should be able to provide you with this).

you need a pet kennel that meets regulations. basically the animal has to be able to stand up and turn around comfortably in it. naturally, it should be a hard shell type, not a soft one.

there is no longer required quarantine for animals in canada (well, at least for dogs, as i looked into it-- double check for cats, but i'm sure they meant all pets). i have to pay 232K at he airport to bring my dog home. i think you should make a booking for your animal to fly with the airline at least 2 weeks before the trip. probably depends on the airline.

thankyou. Do you recommend a vet in seoul that can provide me with this that is not outrageously expensive? Ny current vet speaks minimal english, trying to organize something liek this would be really difficult. . thankyou for your help!

I started going to a vet who spent 2 years in Canada. Her office is near downtown Seoul. If you're interested PM me and I'll give you more specific directions. Sarah's vet is in Ilsan, I believe.

Does anyone know where I can obtain the two certificates I need. By that I mean, are they official forms that should be obtained through the embassy?

i brought my cat here, and will be taking her with me when i go. as far as i know, these certificates should be available directly from your vet. you may need to take them somewhere to get them certified, but i am pretty sure that all the information you need can be provided by your vet.

on a side note, for anyone taking their animal home, i would like to mention that almost every airline will allow a small animal (typically less than 15 lbs, i think) to ride in the cabin with you. you need to make the reservation for this when you buy your ticket, but i recommend that everyone take advantage of this, as the stress level for both you and your furry friend will be far less than if s/he was forced to ride in the belly of the aircraft.

i am so happy to see that so many people are making the effort to bring their animals with them when they go. i know it's difficult/impossible much of the time...

My dog is about 8-10 pounds. I heard that some airlines require that the hard top carry case be able to fit under the seat. Does anyone know what the measurements might be?

i would check the specific airlines website. typically they have all of that information, including the exact size of carrier that can be accomodated in the cabin.

Sungho Kim ([email protected]) at Seoul National University (ummm, there is a veterinary service there) was a great help to me - some English and knew all about the forms, procedures for taking a cat back to NZ which is considerably more complex than Canada.
